In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming is, in effect, using information/knowledge that you, out-of-character, know, while your character does not know such information. An example of such would be knowing a character's name without having spoken to them, because you read their name
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Powergaming is, at its most basic, performing actions a character cannot realistically do, like effectively denying another player the ability to respond. A fine example of this would be 'teleports behind you and cuts your head off' in emote combat.

BACKGROUND

Hassan Nazari hails from far-off desert lands.  He has been a wanderer from a young age, seeing many places in his travels.  His mother and father went missing when he was an infant; some say they were killed by orcs, others say they were done in by the treacherous sands.  Either way, Hassan was raised by his uncle Ahmed Moghadam.  Soon after turning 21, he found himself exiled from his village over his disagreements in regards to faith.  With only his clothes and a scimtar to his name, and little to no knowledge of what lay beyond his little hamlet, Hassan set out into the desert.  His travels brought him to Sutica, where he discovered his fondness for company and drink after a “Tavern Crawl” with a band of dwarven revellers (for whom this act was a multi-day affair).  This event led him to decide his ultimate goal in life was to see the vast variety of cultures on display in this land (and, more importantly, to learn their drinking habits).

CHARACTERISTICS

As a Farfolk of Qalasheen background, Hassan is a very easygoing and sociable individual.  He has strong work ethic, but has managed to (for the most part) strike a balance between work and leisure.  Despite being unsure of the religion he was brought up in, he is laid-back enough he will not clash with others over disagreements regarding such things.  Despite his rather stocky and serious appearance, he is amiable and would rather drink with a person than have to fight them.  Despite this, his years of wandering and surviving in harsh conditions have made him tough, and he is more than handy with his blade.  Those who get on his good side will find in him a jovial and loyal friend.  As for those who manage to wrong him, they’d best hope their gods show them mercy, because Hassan will surely not.

She begins, then pauses to study their face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a chair, “Where do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?”

Example: (delete this when you add your own)

"Oh, I just, uh…" The traveler stutters, tensing up. They eye the crone, then back outside the shack. For a moment, the air thickens with anticipation, until…
