How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: To avoid powering in roleplay one must simply keep in mind two things. Firstly the capabilities of the character being roleplayed and the limitations of the world they are in. Working within the bounds of these two things will prevent powergaming. It is important to also ensure that the capabilities of your characters and also reasonable with the world as well.

A great reason to avoid powergaming is to have clear and well defined strengths with limits and weaknesses. For instance rather than having your character "John be fast" say John can sprint up to 24mph. Specificity is a great way to have strengths that don't go too far. Of course having things a character is bad at is great too.

Also while roleplaying use words like "attempts" or "tries to". Or better yet describe the entire action as an attempt, for example: *He lifted his foot up and put all his strength and weight behind it aiming it toward to the door* This allows for a great picture without an inherent outcome, this is great if the player (Never mind the character's confidence in their action) is unaware of the strength of the door; another player might be able to RP the doors 'action', or give you a hint at what is likely to happen.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming disrupts fair roleplay by creating stories which don't fully take place within the game world. Rather than a character reacting to things within the world they reside in, they act on the player’s knowledge. This creates a dissonance between the actions of the character and the world around them.

Rather than ‘John saw the tracks and so began to hunt the deer’ the story becomes ‘John’s player knows that there is a deer around here, so John begins to hunt it.' This kind of behavior makes the stories we create through roleplay far far less compelling. Rather than story elements leading to more action and reaction, things simply happen. Things that, from a story perspective, have no reason to.
It is important to keep in mind that roleplaying is really ALL about the characters and the story they craft together. Metagaming, very simply, ruins these stories and corrupts the actions of characters whose players engage in it by removing the authenticity of the world.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"Expecting me? Unlikely," Vaestar says  curtly, eyes darting quickly around the tent. "But alright I'll tell you," He says slowly getting on one knee only barely even touching the cushion before looking up at the old woman, "but I want to know your story afterwards." Waiting a beat before moving on, "Firstly my name is Vaestar, in truth there is little to tell, I'm a simple traveler only wishing to see evermore of the world, both its natural beauty and its peoples." he says while becoming a bit more comfortable in his stance though still with one foot flat on the ground.

"Before my travels I lived with my grandfather, I grew up with him, in a small hut in the wilds hunting and foraging to live, a good simple life." He says casually gesturing with his left hand, eyes always moving; peeking through the tears in the tent. "I use those skills now in my travels.” Before his death he told me that his only regret is that he hadn't shown me the world himself. Ever since I have been on the move, I like to think that through what he taught me he is showing me the world." He pulls out a large book, "so tell me of your life, if it's alright it would go in my journal as many stories from strangers have before."
