    How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Meta-gaming is playing in a realistic way. You can only use information you learned ingame (i.e. not via a PM on Discord)
    How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Power-gaming is having extraordinary skills that aren't realistic or acting irrealistic. (i.e. having the ability to fly)

My character would respond calmly with confident, “I am in this city for adventure! What does bring you here?”

He would wait for the well-dressed gentleman to answer or walk away, and continue his walk. When he does see a stall that sells adventurous stuff, he would go for a chat. Trying to get money of the price, because he likes cheap things. 

If the person continues asking questions, it depends if there's some meeting he has to get. If there's none, he would chat. Else he would end the conversation in a friendly way: “Sorry, I have to go as there's a meeting I have to catch.”
