How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Never force an action or state on another player without giving them an opportunity to react, or a choice in the situation. This includes but is not limited to: Taking a “sleeper” hostage without permission. Claiming to be related to another character without permission.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: You don't want to change the rules or be heavy-handed. Sometimes the best approach is to have a straight talk with the problematic player. Explain to them without judgment what metagaming is and how D&D isn't a competitive game, you don't have to leverage all the rules to 'win.
