    How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Staying in character. making sure im fair.
    How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: For example: Your friend is locked up in a dungeon and they tell you how to get them out, and tell you stuff you shouldn't know.

"I have had a long cold journey to get here." I scan around the room, lookin' at the stuffs and things hanging on the wall. "I was but a poor farmer." "I had nice humble home, living with my family on our farm." "It was peaceful." "Until the raiders came." "They burnt our fields... slaughtered our cattle!" "I had gone to town to sell at the market." "When I came back, my family was gone. I searched around the house. our money and jewels were all gone. robbed. I went around the farm... and I found them." "killed by the raiders." "after that I had nothing left there." "I mourned the dead but it wouldnt feed me belly. I headed out in search of work and food." "that is all."

I wrapped up my story, staring at her intently...
