Briefly explain the lore behind this construct or creature:

The two Hou-Zi religions are Shenjiao and Hua-Jiao.

Shenjiao is the worship of Hou-Shen and his three sons; Da, Xiao and Wang. All are believed to have shed their mortal bodies and ascended to heaven. Hou-Shen was the first Hou-Zi created by Metzli and his three sons are believed to be the first of the their respective sub-species of Hou-Zi.

Hua-Jiao is just a copy of Buddhism.

Ai primarily follows Shenjiao in worshipping her ancestors, but respects some of Hua-Jiao’s teachings about karma.

The Hou-Zi kingdom was founded and ruled over by Metzli’s chosen Hou-Shen in the jungles of Asul, in the Isles of Axios. The Hou-Zi fought a conquest against the elves in Axios to expand their empire from the capital of Jing Taiyun, the monkey men took close to half of Axios before peace was made with the elves. 

After 100 years of peace, war came again but the elves, killed Hou-Shen, fought the Hou-Zi out of their lands and back to the capital of Jing Taiyun which collapsed soon after.

Hou-Shen got reincarnated and rebuilt the city of Jing Taiyun, ready for a third war with the elves, they lost again and were forced to remain in the jungle and not expand beyond the capital. Hou-Zhi society then gradually collapsed after that, and Hou-Shen disappeared.

Currently Hou-Zi live in small settlements across the world, their old empire and glory just a myth.

Ai is a Fei-Zhu, the subrace resembling baboons. They’re the most colourful of the Hao-Zi, their fur often coming in many different bright and vibrant colours. They’re the weakest of the subraces, but also the quickest and most agile, favouring the nobler occupations in society. Fei-Zhu are the most devout to Hou-Shen out of the Hou-Zi, hence why Ai primarily follows Shenjiao. Fei-Zhu are typically between 5’5” and 6’5” in height, weigh from 100-200lb and can live up to 300 years.
