I, Ser Markus of House Kortrevich, Margrave of Korstadt, former Lord Palatine of the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska and incumbent Knight Paramount of those specified lands, hereby abdicate the Margraviate of Korstadt and all other noble titles  to my firstborn son, Viktor Otto Kortrevich. By extension, I am relinquishing my patriarchy of House Kortrevich to Viktor Otto Kortrevich as well, and the newly determined Margrave of Korstadt is responsible for the following:

• To preside over the House of Kortrevich to the best of his ability in the service of the aforementioned House
• To ensure the prosperity of House Kortrevich and the lands within his jurisdiction
• To be honorable and righteous in the protection of his kinsmen and in his duties as a leal subject to the Crown

I have cherished my time as the patriarch of House Kortrevich and Margrave of Korstadt, and I praise God for this life he has gifted me. I hope that Viktor may share in this statement once it is time for him to write such a decree as this.

Ser Markus Kortrevich smiled as he read over the missive. He leaned back in his chair, a carefree expression dancing upon his features. “Free at last, free at last..” the Knight would mumble with glee.

Markus Kortrevich was not present in Korstadt on the morning of his uncle’s passing. He had spent another night in his office located in Ekaterinburg Palace, too tired for the journey to his margraviate due to the overloaded schedule. He received word of his uncle’s last battle along with the addressed missive. As he read the parchment, a flurry of emotions overcame the Lord Palatine. His mind returned to various memories in his life when he uncle had guided him, when he had scolded him, the countless arguments over his chosen profession, the moments on the battlefield where the two had cheered triumphantly as the victory bells rang, when he gifted Markus the priceless rapier, Rodrik’s Folly. He smiled as he read the pride that his uncle felt and he made a silent oath to uphold the family’s legacy, per his uncle’s last wish. His next appointment arrived earlier than expected and Lord Kortrevich collected himself; after doing so, his eyes relayed a newfound determination.

I write today with the intent to update the general public on the notable events that have transpired in recent years. As we patiently await the next conflict in this endless bloodshed, the Kortrevich Administration instead turns its focus back toward domestic relations.

The Saint Charles College is prospering and it celebrates its first graduating class this last Saint’s Week. Graduates were given a private ceremony per their request and afterward they gathered in the Crow’s Hearth Tavern to celebrate their success. We hope to see them entering the workforce and contributing to the great Nation that has invested their hope in them. On the subject of the workforce, the citizens of Haense are now able to purchase the fully-constructed farmhouses. These long-awaited structures have resolved the housing issues and will promote domestic agriculture in the coming years.

Her Majesty, Queen Maya Valeriya has been working tirelessly with her cousin, Her Highness, Princess Aleksandra Mariya to update the decor of the Royal Palace of Ekaterinburg. Their efforts affect the grand hall, the servants quarters, all bedrooms, the throne, the government offices, the Aulic chambers, the residential keep, and the chapel. They have also implemented proper servant walkways and stairwells, to ensure that our diligent men and women feel appreciated. The royal family continues their unquestioned support of the wellbeing of their citizens and intend to continue their beautification processes throughout the remainder of the Kingdom.

The children are the future of this Kingdom and this fact is not lost on its leadership. Keeping this indisputable truth in mind, the Ward Initiative of 1749 has been ordered and confirmed by the Crown. The initiative dictates that vassals of the Crown are required to enroll their children as wards of various government officials and legislative members of the nation. We will continue the tradition of investing in our youth to ensure they are capable of doing the same so that our Kingdom may continue its lively existence for generations to come.

I have been working closely with Koeng Andrik IV to continue our government reforms and, in doing so, we have replaced incumbents on the Aulic Council and other government offices with new blood. The Crown would like to officially congratulate Mister Peter Bisk on his appointment to High Steward, Lord Erwin Barclay on his appointment to Lord Marshal, Miss Hana Kovachev on her appointment to Lady Treasurer, Ser Aedan Capulei on his appointment to Vice Marshal, Mister Siegmund Wick on his elected office of Maer, and, finally, Mister Mikael Kovachev and Mister Siegmund Corbish on their elected offices of Alderman, respectively. Hardworking citizens will never cease to be acknowledged and rewarded.

His Majesty, Koeng Andrik IV has deemed it fit to make numerous titular adjustments to the nobility of Hanseti-Ruska. His Majesty would like to officially congratulate the House of Baruch on its titular acquisition of the Duchy of Valwyck, the House of Kortrevich on its titular acquisition of the Margraviate of Korstadt, and the House of Kovachev on its re-ennoblement and titular acquisition of the Barony of Kvaz. Markus Kortrevich received the news from his study in Fort Korstadt and immediately began packing for an extended stay in the capital. As he did so he muttered ”Rest well my Koeng, one of the best any man could’ve served.” 

Markus Kortrevich read over the gazette in bed as his bandages were being changed. ”You are making a speedy recovery! Should be completely healed in a Saint’s Day.” The nurse announced, prompting the Lord Palatine to crack a smile.

I address you today to report that the state of the Kingdom is good. As we embark on our continued quest for the betterment of our realm, I will take this opportunity to speak to every household, every business, and every great citizen in our society. The government continues to work persistently, fostering the development of many burgeoning industries, cultivating dialogue and diplomacy, and ensuring the preservation of our cultural heritage in these most pressing times. In this report, I will outline the following things to demonstrate the efforts of this government and I will continue to update the public on issues forthcoming:

On the Nature of the War
This war has diminished into nothing more than a tiresome task, our enemies cowering in their dystopian citadels. We lay in wait while Arcas is shaken deeply by earthquakes, causing massive pits to form. Do not be fooled by the stagnation of conflict, our triumph is inevitable and will cement the Dual Monarchy of Hanseti and Ruska as the true Highlander nation-state.

The Builders’ Guild
I deemed it necessary for Haense to once again invest in its artisans, as it has been known for since its founding. These Haensefolk are unrivaled in their precision and execution, seemingly effortless in their assembly of much-needed structures. The Guild is currently assessing a variety of projects to inform me of the correct action to be taken, as of now they have begun refurbishing the interior of the palace of Ekaterinburg and various beautification processes to counteract the land scarring that has stained our surrounding lands due to wartime defenses. If you wish to become apart of this esteemed grouping of craftsmen, feel free to contact my office directly. 

Saint Charles College
As promised, Saint Charles College has been established with a curriculum now having been published. Two sessions have been conducted since its establishment, both receiving a high attendance. I have personally sat in on these sessions, as should any Haeseni citizen that feels an inclination to become knowledgeable on the history of our shared culture. The institution has already become a cornerstone of religious and cultural preservation and I will not allow it to regress for my duration in office. Contact the Dean of the College, Prince Georg Alimar, for enrollment and details in the realm of education.

A Rural Focus in Modern Times
The common man has suffered greatly at the hands of these wartorn times. I intend to change this narrative, as all Haeseni citizens are to be treated with the same respect as any other member of society. I will first do this by constructing farmhouses for our commoners, fulfilling a bill that I had presented in His Majesty’s Royal Duma that had been written by a commoner named Godvin Varvec, who has since passed. In memory of Godvin, we are waving the buyer’s fee on a farmhouse to his first of kin, though taxes will still be expected yearly. Each of these farmhouses will be accompanied by a smaller farm alongside it, accompanied by a larger community farm for all Hansetians to reap. Our wondrous Builders’ Guild has already completed the blueprints for the farmhouses and adhered to proper zoning laws and procedures. Construction will begin within the next Saint’s Week.

The Beginnings of a Booming Economy
Since the population has begun to rise once again in the capital city of New Reza, we are experiencing the economic prosperity that has come with it. We have seen the openings of numerous new businesses, such as the Baruch Fishing Company and the Mother Cluckers. These fine organizations specialize in serving the Haeseni people, offering their goods and wares for a fraction of the price elsewhere. Do your part and buy Haense manufactured products to ensure that the capital flows back into our community.

To conclude this report, I would like to thank the citizens of Haense for being apart of this glorious community; you are the lifeblood of our grand society. A Kingdom is only as strong as the citizens within it, and that is precisely why Haense is superior to every other contender.

Since the dawn of my family’s creation, we have remained a humble House. We have not asked for these honors, these opportunities, these pure miracles of life that GOD has blessed us with. Great men seem to attract greatness without begging or yearning for such. I write to the public of Haense today, not to gloat, but rather to acknowledge. The great men and women of the House of Kortrevich have not faltered in the entirety of their existence. We have met foe and friend alike, we have donned armor and cloak the same, and we have held blade and quill with grace. This monumental day is christened by the achievement that is like none other. Constructed in a mere Saint’s Day, the grand fortress of Korstadt is now cemented into the scorched earth of Old Reznian lands. It stands as a protector, it stands as a symbol, it stands as a reminder to all beings that we do not falter. We do not fear. We are Kortrevich. We are Haense.

In two Saint’s Days, we will face our foes once again. We have toiled through this war, we have waited patiently for our times to strike. We have raised our blades against the scum of Morsgrad, we have held our kin as their life left this world. We have driven our steel deep into pagan hearts, we have driven them out of our lands, and we have shown the world that Canonist men will persevere no matter what obstacle may stand opposed. Follow me into battle, men, and we will finish this fight that was started so long ago. AVE HAENSE. AVE OREN.

The Chancellor’s Report, 1742

We, the people of Hanseti-Ruska, have shown unparalleled strength during these wartorn years. We began this journey of triumph with a bout of loss. We have lost kin, friends, and loved ones. We transferred this insurmountable pain into a fire in our hearts. A determination, the likes of which our enemies have never faced.

Yet, hope is far from lost. Our recent attacks against AIS targets have been successful, and many enemy soldiers have been struck down. Soldiers of the Brotherhood raided the Suffonian city, our most treacherous former allies, and cut down the few defenders that garrisoned it. Now, just this last Saint’s Day, we achieved our first victory on the open roads against the Alliance of Independent States. Haeseni, Imperial, and Ruswick forces triumphed at Hangman’s Bridge, defeating a force consisting of troops from all over the AIS. Out of battle comes glory, and many of our own have shown their valor and skill within these recent victories. Loyal soldiers such as Charles Henway and Zaraleen Tamarid killed many enemies, with hopefully many more to come.

With the dawn of this new hope for the Haeseni people, the time has also come to pass on the torch to new leadership. The Honorable Baron of Freising, Lord Wilheim Barclay, has served Our Kingdom for well over two decades with a great degree of honor and dignity. A veteran of the War of the Two Emperors, Lord Barclay has led the Brotherhood of Saint Karl through several different military engagements, including the Lorraine Revolt and the Three Month’s War. He and his officers have created one of the finest militaries in all the Empire, and His Majesty, King Andrik III, owes him a great debt of gratitude for his service throughout the years.  However, with this victory, Lord Barclay has deemed it fit to resign from his position in order to allow a new leader to take command of the war effort. Although he will remain involved as an officer within the Brotherhood of Saint Karl, His Majesty has deemed it fit to name Prince Otto Sigmar as the interim Lord Marshal for the duration of the war, after which another shall be chosen to serve in the position for the long term.

Together, we shall strive toward victory as one people and as one Kingdom, united in a common cause as we move ever closer to emerging victorious in this war. To the AIS, I have but one message to give: the Haeseni people will never give up, we will never surrender, and we will finish the fight.

Markus Kortrevich smiled as he walked away from the battle. His sword had tasted the blood of pagans and traitors alike on this day, and as he rejoined his men within the walls of New Reza he cheered, ”Ave Haense! Ave Oren!”

The Bull’s Revenge

Markus Kortrevich sat at his desk in Ekaterinberg when a bird landed on the windowsill beside him. He plucked the scroll that had been meticulously tied to the fowl’s right leg, and no sooner had this been accomplished did he begin hearing shouts from the front of the stronghold. The Lord Palatine stood and began walking toward the door, his gait turning into a sprint as his eyes reread the recently dried ink on his gifted parchment. His feet barely touched the ground as he raced through the halls, down the stairs, and flung the outer doors wide open.

 Before him was a scene of confusion, its leading actor played by Commander Brutus of Rubern. He was tied to a fencepost nearby with Senator Siegmund Corbish’s interrogation echoing off the surrounding walls. To his right and left were soldiers of the Brotherhood of St. Karl, their black and yellow uniforms dampened by the rain and sleet that had been sent from the clouds above. His wife, Winnifred Ophelia, and her younger brother were also nearby the scene, watching with grim expressions as the inquiries flew from the Senator’s mouth. A young boy, a scholar, approached Markus as he went up to the scene. He requested of Markus a small government position to begin his studies and as Markus attempted to listen, Brutus’s voice pulled his mind from the conversation.

Markus Kortrevich excused himself from the boy and turned on his heel, stalking to the stables where the Commander was held. He stood in the doorway and listened for a moment before he turned to the soldier to his right. 

“What is your name?” he narrowed his eyes as he heard Brutus chatter on.

“Aeden Capulei.” the guard answered.

“Give me your hammer.” Lord Kortrevich responded, a gruffness sneaking into his voice as he held out his right hand expectingly.

Aedan obeyed his order and Markus told Siegmund to bring Brutus to the courtyard. Markus stared at the man who had once tormented him for his interest in learning and with a clenched jaw he grunted out an order to put Brutus onto his knees. The men holding him kicked his legs from under him, and Markus raised his hammer high above his head. He paused a moment, and then brought it down forcefully upon the Commander’s skull, splattering it across the cobbles of the keep. He heard his wife’s scream behind him and offered her a simple, blank look before holding the war hammer back toward its rightful owner, where it was accepted. The Lord Palatine returned to the scholarly boy once more and held out a blood-smeared hand.

“Let us see about getting you that position, boy.”

I speak to you today with the drums of war nearly drowning out my thoughts. War is upon our great nation once more and it will be akin to nothing we have seen in the past.
 

Unholy men wish to be rid of Haeseni blood by spilling it across the lands as if it were fertilizer. They wish to boil our eyeballs and eat them from skewers. They wish to take our women for their devilish desires. They wish to take our children to convert them into paganic servants of false gods.

The men and women of Haense will NOT allow such to transpire. We will rise from the ashes of our capital, strike our enemies hard in the dead of night, ride fearlessly into the unknown abyss, and show the entirety of Arcas of our prominence.

To those dastardly men who seek to eradicate us from these holiest of lands, I say continue your streak of abhorrence. Continue your impertinent quest against the most righteous of peoples. Your efforts will fall short, your men will succumb to the blackness, and your legacies will be only a stain on the pages of my memoir.

I address you here today for the first time as your Lord Palatine. After being named the Palatine-Aspirant a year prior to the ink drying on this document, I have now been tasked by His Majesty King Andrik III to forge a government from this Kingdom’s prosperity. Lord Palatine Ser Konrad Stafyr has decided to step down from his position to allow me to take the reins of these beautiful lands. I intend to do so with haste so that we as a people do not squander the abundance that has been bestowed on this Kingdom.

Regardless of our many blessings, the men and women of Hanseti-Ruska have been unequivocally challenged in the most recent years. The burning of our beloved city, the incessant bandit raids, a housing crisis, and the rumblings of a war yet to come; all of these events are impeding the progress of our glorious motherland. I refuse to let the selfish desires of men cloud my judgment, and I will take any and all measures that I deem necessary to ensure that our grand society does not suffer a moment longer. I will continue my position as the Leader of the Centralist Bench and I will do so with a firm hand. The Crown will spoil akin to a batch of milk forgotten in the sun should these actions not be taken. 

I have been a civil servant for the entirety of my life and served under many different men. I began my studies as a young boy at the age of barely six with the current Senator, Terrence May. At the age of nine, I became the ward of Ser Konrad Stafyr during his long reign as Lord Speaker of His Majesty’s Royal Duma. After six years, I continued my education onward to the Vice-Chancellor of the Empire at the time, His Excellency Simon Basrid, who has recently become the Archchancellor of the Empire. I hastily returned to the great city of Reza, as Imperial life had no interest to me and on my return I accepted the position of the Lord Palatine’s Chief of Staff. I served in this office until the eventual appointment of Palatine-Aspirant, and along with it came the position of Leader of the Centralist Bench in His Majesty’s Royal Duma. I have committed my every waking moment since my birth to this fine government, and I am honored to have the opportunity to create a government under my own name.

Furthermore, I would like to express the tremendous gratitude toward the previous Lord Palatine, Ser Konrad Stafyr, and His Majesty King Andrik III for enabling me to have this fortuity. The importance of such a monumental task does not escape me, and I refuse to allow such an endeavor to be anything less than superlative. With that being said, I do not only serve His Majesty and the noblemen of Haense, but I serve the citizens as well; which are the men and women I relish in calling Haensefolk. To you, I deliver education; so that you and your children may one day rise above the chains of noble blood and show the world of your excellence. I will bridge the widening crevasse between the nobleman and the commoner, and I will do so with a total rehabilitation of the current education system that is in place. In this past year alone, I passed two bills in His Majesty’s Royal Duma that will reform our education and schools; also providing the administrative bodies and framework needed to sustain such a momentous shift in knowledge procedures. This is only the beginning of our rise to becoming an advanced civilization that will be the envy of Arcas.
