Jehan’s parents, unlike the majority of their Halfling brethren, left Brandybrook for a more intense city life. They kept the tradition of partying and drinking, but somehow cast aside family value. Little Jehan was left behind by his fun-loving parents to be raised by his nanny, who lived in the countryside on the South Coast of the Arcas Peninsula. With their son struggling to survive in the muddy village, the joyous couple lived a glitzy life, full of booze and dices, roaming between pubs and taverns, with their stolen minae. They resided in Sutica, the city of merchants, or the city of purses. The couple had to steal to support their consumerist lifestyle. They joined a local guild of thieves and, with their inherent half-man advantage, became quite skilled at stealing. They sometimes sent minae to Jehan and Nanny, implying that they still had some morality and responsibility left. They were not cold-hearted people; they were just too drunk to remember they had a son. They only came visit Jehan on his birthday, or during Snow’s Maiden.
Nanny is of the human race. No Halfling nanny would want a baby whose parents abandoned the Halfling community. She taught little Jehan almost anything he should know. Occasionally, she took him to Sutica’s fair. Little Jehan was dazzled by the glamour of the busy City, and thus dreamt of living in it one day -- not like his alcoholic parents of course, but like a decent tradesman. He signed up to be the village’s messenger at the age of 11, exchanging information on goods and prices between the village and Sutica. It was a big city indeed: Jehan hardly ever saw his parents. On Jehan’s 15th birthday, his family did not come, nor did they send a birthday gift. A week later, rumour has it that they were killed on sight during a miscarried burglary. We cannot say Jehan was in grief. It’s just without their mina support, Jehan could barely make ends meet. Not after a year, Nanny died in a flu epidemic. Jehan had no reason to live in the poor village which brought him bad memories anymore. He left for the City he had longed for with a pocketful of dreams.
Jehan has a feeling of hatred and fear towards Orcs. They look frightening, and Jehan speculates it was some Orc/Orcs that killed his parents. He dreads them doing the same to him one day. Jehan hates violence and warfare. He deems them barbaric and meaningless. That hate is in his Halfling blood.
