You mean 10 minutes to completely come to grips with how the entire forging system works so the next time I do it i literally require less than a minute because I now know how it works? Since transitioning to the new map I have walked 4 or 5 people through how to go from nothing to crafting copper tools with literally just guiding them to different crafting tables and telling them which tool to use.

See the problem is Vortex doesn't exist in a vacuum. It exists among all the other unique and non intuitive aspects of the server. When a new player joins, they need to contend with personas, chat channels, emoting, and a million other things scream for their attention. One of the top new player complaints when I was on the team was just how different and restricted LoTC felt compared to the vanilla experience. Some people call that a pro but if you're going to make a roleplay server on Minecraft, you should at least lean into the Minecraft's strengths. The server should be intuitive for someone who's already familiar with vanilla Minecraft.

Are you saying that you immediately knew how to make everything in minecraft? I dont think so. Not to mention the entire vortex system is optional, not mandatory participation. Not to mention there will literally be a guide available to everyone.

We have a tutorial island. It wont take much to make tutorial island include vortex. A guide is also coming out - as I and others have said countless times. If people cant be bothered reading the guide, thats on them. The application process for the server is already rigorous and excludes vast numbers of possible players on purpose.

From what I could tell, Vortex is required if you want to craft any of the new PvP items. It also looks like the world team wants to use Vortex to simulate some sort of economy, I really wouldn't call it "optional".

The idea that it's somehow the player's fault developers made a system that requires a written guide to use is bonkers......The goal should be to make the server more welcoming and easier to get into. Also, I'm not sure where you got the idea that the application process is in any way rigorous. The major complaint for apps over the last 2 years has been it's too easy lol.

And this is all without actually addressing the fact that the GUI looks pretty awful. Do we really need to be using glass panes? It's not that much more work to introduce a server resource pack and use blank textures. And if you don't want to introduce a customer resource pack for whatever reason, you could at least use heads for the various icons......

Dont insult people if you cant take insults. Simple as that. People are complaining that new players wont understand the system - I a new player figured it out in ten minutes or less and then i was told my opinion doesnt count because i havent played on the server long enough. Then people are saying im only defending it because i tested it (which i didnt) and then im a staff simp or im just whiteknighting for Nick.

    Yeah, thats pretty big brain.

Taking 10 minutes to figure out how to craft a basic tool is not a thing. Good UX design should be intuitive. You either make it intuitive or build enough hints into the UI for players to understand. A new player should not require signs that say "MAKE A HAMMER" or forum guides that tell you how to use the crafting system.

And all of this confusions is with everything a player needs for crafting within a 20x20 square. What happens when a player is dropped at spawn with no access to these workstations? How does a player know they need to craft an axe, harvest wood, find a workstation, craft a saw, and make stick. And you can't have any old wood, you need special wood that doesn't look any different than normal wood.

I'm happy that LoTC is finally experimenting with a crafting system again. We always planned to come back to it but didn't have the resources or manpower at the time. However, blindly defending a poor implementation helps no one.

My criticisms aside, I noticed in the NBT that there's versioning for the items. Does this mean our jokes about N.E.X.U.S are finally happening? Also, bucket should show how many ingots they have dammit.....

We are going to try reducing the frequency of restarts to preserve precious RP immersion (this is possible as soon we can double or triple the accessible RAM for our main server, yes Tofuus this is OK with the right settings).

Restarts are more about having a fixed schedule to deploy updates on. Not as a band-aid fix to memory leak issues lol.

Man oh man. The slow reversal of everything we worked on is pretty disheartening. We have world team proposing grindy gated professions systems. Now you’ve brought back NSA. At certain sizes it makes sense to have automated chat filtering. But come on, at lotc’s size just allow people to report chat infractions and act on those reports.

Here’s an easy enough implementation, add a chat report command. Player sees another player saying some stupid ****. They report the stupid player. Last x amount of chat for stupid player are saved and a report is created and queued up. Mods can see this queue and review the reported chat. If action is needed, punish the reported player. If the player who reported them is abusing the system, punish them and remove their ability to report other players.

Have you ever had a negative experience with the monks?

Yupper-do I sure did. I watched a Monk bring a Snow Elf to HELENA before Fenn even though players were in Fenn. Though I heard that that got taken care of it was still alarming As someone who is helping run a nation that is really reliant on the new Snow Elves that come in I feel that a monk should check the person’s application really quick to ensure they are being guided to the right place. If they say that they are from such and such nation they should be brought there and even be able to ring the rally bell if necessary. There is more than likely someone who is willing to come on and help the new player rply and oocly if we are told about it. The lagpocalypse hit nations hard and trying to recover from it can be difficult for more race built nations, and you cannot expect one or two people to idle for 12-14 hours a day doing almost nothing waiting for the new players to come back if there is a notification system.

We didn’t even get an incoming-new player ping for someone into they were already in our Nation with the Monk guide that brought them.

As a New Player, were you helped by a monk?

Yes- and it was a wonderful experience since they made sure I got to the nation I needed to get to and introduced me to a few people who could help. You specifically Muffins.

Did the monk guidance give you a better understanding of how the server works?\

Yes it did, because they taught me everything about emotes, emote colors, chat channels, the whole works. Granted- this was almost a year ago now (I came onto the server the last week of June last year). They were kind to myself and were even willing to rp with me a little and made sure I was fully settled in and talking to other players before leaving me for my RP journey. Though I never saw that Monk again- I am still thankful for them.

Do you think that monk guidance is beneficial to players who are new to the server?

Yes, specifically for those who need a specific destination they need to be brought to. Once again, as a race-based nation and a player who had chosen my character for that nation they should be brought to the specific place as needed to prevent people from swindling them and bringing them to the wrong place. Bandits are also a pretty big issue as well since new players know so little as it is it can be overwhelming.

As a new player, were you left feeling more confident after being helped by a monk?

    Yes.

Do you feel that the monks are necessary for assisting new players on the server?

Yes. I do. Of course certain races like Elves and Humans are free to explore and chose their new destinies- but if a person wants a specific nation they should be helped by a non-biased member to get them to that nation. And to teach them the rather complex nature of the server itself- though I do agree with the point of few that if we had a cleaner UI to the help system it would be so so much better.

Didn’t Fenn declare monks kill on site at some point?

never seen someone use a soulstone in character, always figured I’d be banned for powergaming if I actually used a magical teleporty rock in character (don’t have approval from the LT to do that unfortunately)

they are an oddly RP-flavored item but damn if our community hasn’t done a great job collectively pretending they don’t exist

I think one of the devs railroaded some soulstone lore so that it exists. But the community has basically decided they don’t really exist in rp and are a stand in for travel.

  6. This is an interesting collision of moderation policy and technical policy. Howard is correct, personas are still being treated as a single use commodity when there is no longer any reason to.

For a long time many unlocks were per persona because things like xp were tied to the idea of different characters and not to a user. This led to policies that actively discouraged and punished  reuse of personas.

However, nexus is no longer a thing and I belive personas should just be slots. Unlocks and perks should be tied to the account as a whole and not to individual personas.

I also view character cards as a representation of knowledge that is missing when we view something virtually. Things you would notice if that character were standing in front of you. The characters height, if they have a certain odor, if they have a limp, or if they talk with an accent.

The race field makes sense because there's often certain physical aspects that are unique to each race. But I also recognize you can disguise those physical aspects. I'm all in favor of requiring race be set on character cards if users are able to mask that when they say pull a hood over their head.

  7. IIRC high load prevents taming of horses because taming is part of the AI process. If you have an already tamed horse you can open it’s inventory. You’re kind of **** out of luck because disabling mob AI is the only way to have reasonable tps at 200+ playercounts.

I would like to venture that the community don’t make tickets because they know that the Moderation team won’t be able to help them in time, or will close their tickets when they are offline. Perhaps a public poll would go a long way to seeing what the community think of the current team, and their effectiveness, as this few tickets would in my mind raise concerns in regards to historical data regarding tickets.

Really the more interesting data would be average response time for tickets. Not just tickets closed. Would also be interested in seeing how many tickets were closed because the issue was solved vs the player being offline.

  13. The upgrade to new hardware has been 6 months in the making. It's nice to see something that started as sporadic and me grumbling in a vc actually happen.

I'd like to see some actual communication for once. Why are new admins never announced? Are you so ashamed of your picks that you try to hide them?

How come Admin hiatus's are never documented anywhere? It feels like a lot of the time people to need to badger staff to actually get any status updates. And half of the time it'll end with “x admin is on hiatus"

Are rumors of Admin protocol no longer being a thing true? Admins used to do unanimous votes for stuff to pass but it seems like every Admin is acting independently now.

Finally, what does it take to get a response to any of this. When I bring up concerns in discord I get told to make a forum post and get banned. But when I make forum posts they just get ignored. Maybe I need to send you guys a fax or something.
