  1. Starry Owl

    Spoiler

    Origin

The starry owl is an uncommon species of owl native to the towering mountains and trees of Aevos. Their uniquely colored feathers give the appearance of the starry night sky when viewed from below, providing camouflage during the darkest hours of the night. These owls nest far up high, as close to the stars as they can get, where their illusory appearance is hardest to discern. They can be found in any tall peak or pine across the land, albeit slightly rarer than other owls.

    Biology

Starry owls are easily identifiable by their unique plumage. Similar at first glance to a black-banded owl's feathers, they are mainly dark black in color, with very small stripes of silver, cyan, and light yellow that create the starry illusion from afar. The primary wing feathers contain less pigmentation than the body and tail feathers, being almost completely black. Their body feathers are bound extremely tight together during flight, creating an almost smooth sheen that reflects moonlight just enough to make their 'stars' shine. On cloudy nights or during a new moon, they can somewhat hide the colorful parts of their feathers, but not completely, making them more easily identifiable and less active during these times.

These owls range in size similarly to the black-banded owl - males being between 9-12 inches in height with a 17-22 inch wingspan, and females being between 10-14 inches in height with a 19-26 inch wingspan.

    Behavior

Being strictly nocturnal, like most owls, starry owls sleep during most of the day and only hunt during the darkest hours of the night. As such, they become more active during the winter season, when nights are longer. This causes an interesting phenomenon where, unlike many migratory animals that follow the warm season, starry owls will migrate at the beginning of summer, just after mating season, to follow the longer nights. They are very capable navigators, able to fly long distances with consistent accuracy, which has motivated some to use them for delivering letters.

Starry owls are solitary creatures, never being seen in groups larger than a pair after being old enough to survive on their own. They usually mate for life, and lay 2-4 eggs each breeding season, if conditions allow. Breeding season most often takes place during early spring, but is heavily influenced by the availability of food.

    Taming

Uniquely, starry owls are able to be tamed rather consistently, with enough patience. Once its trust is gained, it remains very loyal to its owner, regularly returning after being let out. It does require a good measure of care, though. Spending time with them during their waking day hours and letting them out every night to hunt for food are both necessary. Starry owls will only bond with one person, though, and are shy around anyone else. They possess minimal faculties for training, only able to be trained in very simple tasks, and will never comply to being trained to attack or defend.

    Spoiler

    Redlines

-Cannot be trained to do more complex tasks than answer to a name, be called, and act as a flavored way to send letters

-CANNOT provide any combative advantage AT ALL, purely for RP

-Can only have one trusted owner at a time, will take extensive training and persuasion to switch owners

    Spoiler

    OOC Purpose

Owls normally cannot be domesticated and make for terrible pets, which is really sad. I think there should be more tame and flavorful creatures to contribute to our awesome and underrated zoology RP.

  2. It's a good concept

I really like how it's written, leaning heavily into the chaos and unpredictability. The untamed chaos of the void brings power. And then half the table is wacky effects. People are gonna lose their minds at being stunned or frightened at just the wrong time. Luck ain't my thing, but hey, what do I know? It'd certainly be entertaining.

  5. On his way to the library, a young man was lucky enough to happen upon this notice. The thought of being able to share his enjoyment of reading was enough to turn him back around to head towards the aviary instead, where he penned a reply.

Marinus glanced out at the wide Petran valley beside him. The sun was just beginning to set in between the two steep cliff faces that stretched far ahead, slotting neatly into the angled space between two hills. In front of him, a path was set along the side of a towering wall. Far below, he could see the deep blue Petran River, and he could just barely hear the rush of its rapids over his own footsteps on the stone path. Clack, clack. His leather boots were putting in quite a bit of work that day, more than the usual amount their scholarly owner gave them.

    -

He thought back to everything that had transpired over the last two years, after his return. The places he had gone, that he never thought he’d get to see. The opportunities he had taken, that challenged him to dedicate himself to. But mostly, he thought back to the people he had met. Every kind soul that had taken the time to assist him. He smiled to himself, as he pictured their smiles. One day, that would be him. He imagined himself, older and wiser, smiling with the joy only a teacher can experience by watching their student learn.

    -

In the small library, Marinus paced back and forth, examining each shelf from top to bottom. This had become something of a habit for him in recent days. Of all the books, he could not find one worth reading that he had not already read. He sighed and sat down on one of the uncomfortable benches, pulling a few sheets of paper and a quill out of his bag, and wrote about nothing in particular. Between the dim candles and the faint moonlight he could hardly see the words on the page, yet he continued.

Until… something moved. The turn of a page. Barely audible, but stark in the otherwise near complete silence. Then once again. Marinus looked up, confused. He hadn’t heard anyone else enter. Again, the faint slip of a page turning. This time he saw it. Against the wall, on a desk, was a large book. Marinus brought a candle over to it. The book, already open, was slowly turning its own pages. He gently closed the book to take a look at the cover.

    -

Marinus sat cross-legged on the ground, closing his eyes and relaxing his body. He allowed his thoughts to slip away, as he had done many times by now, letting them flow like leaves in a river. All but one. He held on to one memory, imagining every detail, painting every color. It could have been the subject of a child's first drawing. Green grass spread out from under his feet to the edges of his imagined landscape, moving with the gentle breeze. The sky was a calm blue background behind wispy white clouds. Tall, dark brown spruce trees were interspersed throughout the plains. And in front of him, a simple log cabin. He stood still looking at it for a while, noticing each detail that he was intimately familiar with. The worn path to the porch, the dirty windows, the heavy door, the golden brass handle, the slanted dark green roof. It was all there, exactly as he’d remembered seeing it, at exactly the spot he would stop at every day to admire this very view.

He opened his eyes. For just a fleeting moment, a faint bluish-purple glow appeared around his hands.

Forge looks up, stroking his beard.

”Well, actually, I s’pose it just means more free drinks an’ partyin’,” he says, smiling. ”I guess I won’t mind if it’s always like this.”

  11. Forge stares at the notice on the board. He pinches himself, making sure he isn’t dreaming.

”This is why I don’t live in Helena...” he says under his breath.

  12. Forge closed the book. For a long while he sat there, staring at the title. ‘The Death of a Beaver.’

Was he no better than the dwed in the book? Would he, eventually, lose all purpose, and... and-

”Hey, um, mister dwarf sir? Are you done with that book?” The small voice interrupted Forge from his thoughts.

”Oh, o’course. Here,” he said, offering the book to the child in front of him. She took it sheepishly.

”Thanks, mister!” she said quickly, with a little smile.

He watched as the small figure ran off. As the child left his sight, Forge stood up, smiling.

“There’s always gonna be some purpose in me life,” he said to himself, “if nae but tha simplest things I do make people happy.”

”Sir, ‘tis simply a message I bring. The king...”

Forge looked over at the messenger boy, eyelids drooping. ”Well? Spit it out, will ya?”

The boy looked down at his shoes, squirming uncomfortably. ”Well, um... he- he’s dead. Died of an infection from his wound.”

    ”Oh...”

”Go ahead, ye can leave now.”  Forge looked at his unfinished poem. The kingdom of... of...

Tears filled his eyes. He stood up, slamming his fist against the table in front of him, spilling the bottle of ink on it. ”Damnit! Couldn’t even say goodbye... Couldn’t even go ta tha damn ball!”  He bowed his head. ”I’m sorry, me king. Ye were so supportive of me, ye gave me this opportunity, ye praised me smithin’... and I didn’t do a thing for you.”
