Freya was raised in Morsgrad by her father, after her mother died in labor. She overall felt terrible about the loss of her mother, though she eventually understood it wasn't her fault and that helped her move forward in life. Her father fought in the war of two emperors along side Godrick and she was raised as a devout follower of the Red Faith. Freya looked up to her father and dreamt to serve in the honor of the Red Faith just as he did. Due to her father's place in the Martyr's she didn't get to see him much as a teenager. Freya's desire to become a great Martyr comes from a desire to finally impress her father so he would notice her and be proud of her. At the age of ten she began training to be a Martyr, she would play with wooden practice swords within the house while her father was gone. She's motivated by a deep sense of nationalism, and justice for her nation. She considers herself a proud Highlander looking to serve as others have before.
