Born and raised in the Kingdom of Haense, Matilda was raised by religious and devoted parents. She looks back on her childhood with fondness, remembering days of frolicking amongst the ashwood trees with her father and cooking soup in the evenings with her mother. During her young teenage years, Matilda met a boy, Durwin, who taught her to wield a quarterstaff, an activity which she kept secret from her family. Unfortunately, all secrets must come to light, and a few years later, Matilda’s parents found out about her friendship with Durwin. They forbade her to ever speak with him again. When she resisted, her father challenged Durwin to a trial by combat. He whole-heartedly believed that GOD would decide whose lead Matilda would follow. Durwin’s death during the combat caused Matilda to utterly reject the church she had been taught to know and love. While she grieved the loss of her dearest friend, her father pushed her too hard to rejoin the Canonist doctrine, which only resulted in an angry fight between the two. Matilda fled her home, spending the next few years learning to survive on her own through trial and error. During her wanderings, she heard tales of the Sutica’s freedom, and made her way there to see if the tales rang true.
