Fernando was born and raised in a mill. His father, a seasoned miller, would take care of the harder side of the job while the slightly frail, but cunning boy would handle the negotiations trading the goods in the city. His childhood was hard because at first he was a disappointment since he was frail, but as soon as his father noticed his cunning side, he quickly adapted to take the best of his son. After all, everyone must work their share in order to eat.
The mill was built near a river and used the power of the water to grind the grains. It was settled not too far away from the village. Two or three hours of travel, with Genevra (the cow) pulling the empty/full cart. In the city he would trade the goods, meet some friends, drink, play the dice, and enjoy the simplest of the lives before returning home.
One hard day was when his father was caught smuggling stolen goods to be sold elsewhere. He was sentenced guilty and charged ten strikes on the pole and two days behind bars. They got him back half dead, trembling in fever. The next week was critical, but thankfully father recovered.
It was on Fernando's seventeenth fall that everything changed for worst. A plague assaulted the area and his whole family died of it. He only survived because he was out, travelling to another village in order to get a better deal. Now, one year later, Fernando can barely keep the mill in working condition. Maybe it's time to hire someone to help him, or sell the place for good. Maybe he can just hit the road along with Genevra and just live out of trade. Who knows what the future holds for him?
