Lyriel was born on the border of Elvenesse as an only child. When she was young, her house caught aflame, burning everything that she has known to ashes. She (being about 7 years old) was still trapped in the house while her parents got out. She begged and pleaded for her parents to come save her, but they turned away and left her to die. She climbed down into her family's food storage only big enough for her to fit and hid away from the flames. When she woke, she pushed her way through the charred wood pillars that were once her home and climbed outside. She was alone and vulnerable, but she kept her strength, grabbed whatever edible things she could find, a couple of damaged books from the stone bookcase, and stuffed it in her bag along with a map of the surrounding area.
Through the years, Lyriel was able to teach herself how to grow her own crops, how to make her own medicine, and she practices reading every day from what little of the books that survived the fire, and what books she bartered from traders in return for medicine and food that she had on her. Lyriel, wanting to learn more about the arcane magics and spell casting that she had read about, searches out among the vast lands hunting for a teacher to help her learn.
