A Highlander at birth, Vil was born in a small town in the Kingdom of Haense to poor, working parents. His father was a fisherman like his father before him, having spent nearly all of his life in the town on the waters. His mother largely said at home and cared for Vil and his three siblings, of which Vil was the second youngest, but she intermittently worked as a seamstress when possible. His childhood was filled with play and listening to the stories of his father about the town and its many events. Vil was never formerly educated, though his parents did their best to pass on what they knew. His father's stories bred a natural curiousity in the boy, something that would stay with him as he grew and gave him ample opportunity to explore. In his teen years, he spent much of the time mimicking his older brothers as they helped their father with his fishing. In this sixteenth year, however, Vil and his younger sister were out in the forest outside the town when they stopped for a moment to watch a troop of soldiers march by on the main road. And in that moment, Vil thought to himself with wonder as to where those soldiers came from and where they were heading. From then on, he often spent time gazing out at the road, hoping for interesting travelers, including at one point a wandering practitioner of magic. Though initially fulfilling for young Vil, as he grew, he increasingly found the work of his father and brothers unsatisfying, as well as his stories about the town and its "many" events repetitive and unexciting. He yearned to follow the soldiers and the magician, to see what laid beyond the town, forests, and waters of his home. In his heart, though, he felt unease at leaving his family and the relative safety he had felt all his life. It was not until at the age of twenty-one, after years of pondering the question, that he steeled his heart and mind to experience the world, and settle into a new life elsewhere. Vil now sets off for Providence, the seat of the Empire, in search of whatever work he can find, and desiring a story of his own, however big or small.
