Standing over the new home town of the di Cappotelli, Emmanuele is handed a flyer, no doubt ripped from some cottage wall. He reads over the flyer, and upon completion utters, "Pfft. This is no more than an attempt to appease the already churning masses. No doubt it sounds profoundly patriotic to some.." he says, bitter to no end, "But to people with any sense, this shows how desperate Orenian government really is. If Oren was so high and grand as this /scribe/ claims, why indeed do we need propaganda to tell us so? We would already be working and forwarding the "noble" cause Oren claims it is working for." And with that, Emmanuele promptly shreds the document, heading inside to deposit the remains of the patriotic flyer into the dimming fire.

    History

    Beginnings and Vendetta’s

The Cappotelli can trace their lineage to two Illatian families, the Cappi and the Otellani. These two families first recorded appearance is found in 1470, and during this time they co-existed peacefully, the Cappi being well off mine owners, and the Otellani being owners of a popular local fishery. However, chaos erupted when Bernardino di Cappi was found murdered in his manor, along with his wife. The Cappi immediately blamed the Otellani, declaring a vendetta on them. The Otellani attempted to make peace with the Cappi, but this ended when Osvaldo di Otellani was murdered as well, and they declared a vendetta on the Cappi as well. Many bystanders were killed in the bloody process, and the Otellani even managed to ignite a bomb in the Cappi mines. Even though this attack did not do much strategically, it damaged Cappi morale. The vendetta came to an end at around 1489, when the quarrelling families were narrowed down to only a few members, the Cappi called for a truce to end the terrible conflict. The Otellani quickly agreed, suggesting that a marriage to bind the two families together, as to prevent such a horrible battle never happen again. The families combined, forming the new family named the Cappotelli. With their combined businesses, they slowly rebuilt their wealth.

    Reconstruction and Criminalization

Unbeknownst to the previous Otellani, the Cappi had formed criminal connections during the Vendetta, and kept them throughout the Reconstruction, bankrupting certain businesses to keep out competition. The Cappi soon handed over the knowledge of these criminal contacts to the Otellani line, and the last gap between the Otellani and the Cappi was filled. They were now formally the Cappotelli. Over time, the Cappotelli gained more and more momentum in the criminal world, their “honest” businesses slowly becoming nothing more than a front. The common people started to suspect the Cappotelli of their criminal activities, and the need for separation formed. The patriarch at the time, Giuseppe di Cappotelli, came up with the Speakers of Silence, an assassin and arson organization dedicated to the Cappotelli. This group took on most, if not all, of the Cappotelli dirty work, giving the family a clean reputation.

    The Cappotelli Massacre

Soon, the Oren officials caught on to the Cappotelli’s illegal activities, and many were arrested, some being executed on the spot. The ones who were brought to Oren to face a grand trial. Nearly all of the important Cappotelli who had criminal associations were quickly found guilty of treason against Oren, and were executed. The ones who were able to prove their innocence, be it through bribes or legitimate means, had their lands confiscated and thrown into prison for a 10 year sentence. Nearly 27 Cappotelli were executed in the process, igniting a burning hatred of Oren from the family. The remaining Cappotelli remained in prison for longer than their sentence, which only fed more fuel to the fire that burned in the hearts of the family.

    Release to Present

The remnant of the Cappotelli were released around 1499, those of which had formed new connections and contacts, however the renewed criminal activities were carried out with utmost secrecy, and most of them were anti-Oren crimes. The Cappotelli on the surface appeared to be staunchly pro-Oren. However, they supported anything that would put the current rulers out of commission, supporting the removal of all officials and placing ones the people wanted in those positions. They do not support the complete destruction of Oren, as this would lead to mass chaos. They supported any anti-Oren actions, whether it be the forming of an independent kingdom or the removal of all current officials in the Orenian government. They are currently based in the city of Ambrossa, vying for control of it so they can fully establish themselves as a ruling family.

    Di Cappotelli Traits & Appearance

The Cappotelli have some basic traits that are usually shared by everyone, making them look similar. However, people from the Otellani side look different from the Cappi side, and vice versa. Here is a list for both sides of the Cappotelli:

    Casa di Cappotelli

You are a government official, travelling to Oren. On your way , you make a stop, lodging at a homestead near Ambrossa. They give you a bed for the night, and as you fall asleep, you just barely notice a shadowy figure approaching your bed as you go to sleep. The next morning, the hostess is horrified to find you in your current state, that being dead. Multiple stab wounds are on your chest, yet little blood has come of them. A note written in light blue ink would read,

"We speak nothing but the silence. We are brothers-in-arms, against Oren. We are, the Speakers of Silence. Expect us."

[[Heyo! ItalianFerrari here, with a cool new family that's going to be up for recruitment soon. The family will be essentially a Mafia-styled crime family, with certain lines of the family who carry out the dirty work of the "clean" members of the Cappotelli. The assassins of the family have their own organization, called the Speakers of Silence. This secret organization is only known to the Cappotelli, and they are very careful to make sure that they are not seen as associated with them in any way. 7. 1. Akhee is literally 'my brother' and can and is used to refer to a relative by blood. The yaa at the end conjugates it for first person possessive.

    2. Rabbana taqabal mina inaka anta Sami'ul Aleem - Our Lord, accept our service onto thee for you are the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

    رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ العَلِيمُ

Rabb is used in religious connotations and to suggest Allah is used expressly by Muslims is ignoring the Antiochian Orthodox Church and Coptic Churches exclaiming the same phrase in reference to God as well.

    2.

    3. Ifrit, some historians suggest, is merely a pre-Islamic head demon as well.

    4. Ironically people are complaining that the Qalasheen is too closely related to Arab and Islamic tenets and culture, so the bowing actually differentiates the two.

    5 & 6: I digress.

    1. Really? That is not what I was told by my Egyptian/Palestinian friends, but I'll give you that. I only brought up one as too let OP know that that could/should be a well used term.

    2. This was also knowledge I've received from native friends. I am just going to stop relying on them for Arabic at this point. I 100% acknowledge that Muslims are not the sole users of the word Allah, I was just thinking a different word could perhaps be used than that.

    3. I don't really know much about that so I'll stay away from that topic.

    4. I don't see why people are complaining. I'd like to see these people write their own entire culture from scratch, and see how well that turns out. But, being too similar at the same time  is also not a good idea, as it can lead to certain events that could lead to its removal.

  8. Just a couple of things to say on this as I speak Arabic with my Arab friends at school:

    • A good word to know for Qalashi roleplayers would be the word Akhi, or brother, as this specific form of "brother" refers to a brother in the same religion, rather than a maternal one.
    • I'd think a better word for God/Creator would be Rabb, as this word is "non-religious" in the sense that it isn't used in phrases such as [[You guessed it,]] Allahu Akbar!
    • In the Islamic religion, the name Iblis refers to the actual name of the "leader" of the devil, and I'm guessing "Iblees" has his name for a reason. However, going by your listed usage of Shai'tan, that would be used specifically for Iblees. If some one were to use the word in say, an insulting context, they would say, Arfreet.
    • Religiously and culturally wise, people or Arabic origin usually do not bow as a greeting, and Islam-wise, bowing itself is prohibited [[This is for most, if not all Sunni Muslims, as I have very limited knowledge, that isn't biased, on Shi'a Muslims.]]. A universal greeting for formal greetings [[You hit it spot on for the informal greetings :P]] is a respectful and quick handshake, during which you would say the greeting desired based upon whom you are speaking to.
    • An /extreme/ sign of disrespect, is to yank one one's beard. This shows absolute hatred at worse, and a ferverent dislike for the recipient of said action.
    • More to Goldrim than anything, falafel originated from the Middle East, Greece has it due to the Turkish occupation, which brought about many things that originate from Middle East/Turkey  to be known as Greek, even though they historically, never had it.
  9. As the Benedetti messenger arrives into his study, once again loudly barging into the study. “If this is not something of great importance, Dino, it will be your head.”, said Marchisio di Benedetti. The messenger visibly gulps, hoping what he had brought to his master was enough to save his life. “Go ahead and read it, you have already destroyed what /little/ focus I had for working on all this /damned/ paperwork.” Dino would nod quickly, and almost stuttering, began to read the letter from Aurelius Tython. “I suppose that this was important enough to spare you, Dino. Make no mistake that next time there will be no warning.” The courier nodded, and quickly scurried out of the study. The Benedetti patriarch would sigh, and would start drafting a letter to this Aurelius Tython. The letter, after being signed and sealed by Marchisio himself, not trusting Dino with anything at the moment, and would send a different messenger off to deliver the letter. Once it arrived at Aurelius's place of residence, and assuming it got to the man, would read as follows, beginning with the Benedetti family crest:

    ZsMybny.png

To the most esteemed Aurelius Tython of Savoie, and all titles thereunder,

We of the House di Benedetti indeed show great pride in what we do. On behalf of my entire house, I greatly thank you on your most gracious invitation. It is certainly an offer that is most intriguing, and we humbly accept your offer. Unfortunately, it is quite impossible for the entirety of the House di Benedetti to join this Savoieyard Renaissance, as there are many members currently tied down by administrative duties or are abroad in the Kingdom of Oren and cannot be reached. However, we shall send a delegate from our family to assist you in your most glorious endeavours. Our own Giancomo Bari di Benedetti shall arrive as soon as possible to begin assisting with whatever might need help. We once again apologize for not being able to come as one united House, but we hope that our delegate will be of the utmost help.

    Sincerely,

Marchisio Tripliani di Benedetti, Lord-Patrician of the State of Tripliani, Patriarch of House di Benedetti, Proprietor of Benedetti Coal Industries.

As Marchisio di Benedetti was in his study, inspecting the daily output of coal from the mines of his nation of Tripliani, a courier who was seemingly out of breath rushed in. Without even looking up, the patrician-lord would utter in an annoyed tone in his native Illatian tongue, “I do hope that this is something /important/, Dino. I do hate it when you barge in..” “My greatest apologies, Signore Patrizio, but I possess concerning news regarding the Elven States and Oren!” Marchisio would look up at this, now mildly intrigued. “Well, do get on with it then.” As the courier read the “Bindings”, as they were called, Marchisio wonders how the Elven states are taking this, as well as how this affects his nation, and all he has worked to be.

  12. We have crossbows on LotC, but this is good information for others ^^

Oh, crossbows are a thing. We have arbalests and the repeating crossbows here as well as other weird RP creations.

EDIT: … aaaannnndddd Jade beat me to it :C But yes, this is an extremely helpful guide, especially the repeating crossbow since the concept of it was hard to wrap my mind around.

Well, thanks! I then request that this be maybe moved into the guides section, if thats possible.

  13. Amazing! Though I believe this should be put in the guides section.

Well, I wasn’t entirely sure where to put this, so I put this in the Lore Idea’s section just incase crossbows weren’t a thing.

  14. Generally it seems people have a lack of knowledge on crossbows, as with bows; so I created this thread to aid in understanding that very thing.
    xbow-diagram.gif

Backstory: Despite what some people believe, and what they may have you believe, the crossbow has existed for a very long time. Where, and when the crossbow was invented is unknown, but it is believed to have been created by the chinese around  5th century BC.

Mechanics/how it works: While there are many variants of the crossbow (Which will be detailed below) most share a fairly similar mechanism. Essentially it is a bow on a stick, that has a catch and release system. Depending on the draw strength of the crossbow it will usually have a crank, not unlike the one in the above diagram. It uses a pulley system of sorts, thus when you start to crank the crannequin it begins to pull the string towards the nut/catch. Some you pull up using your hands(The more basic ones, and the ones that don't have high draw strength.) Others are like the above diagram, where you use a Crannequin, and some even use the windlass system. Either way, however, if it is two-handed it is going to have stirrup which is for aiding in reloading. You place the stirrup on the ground (so the crossbow is aiming downwards), you then place a foot through, and begin cranking; this is to help stabilize it when cranking. After you finish cranking, you may load a bolt, raise it, and aim. To fire off a bolt, you squeeze lever/trigger, which causes the nut/catch to release, thus sending a powerful and accurate projectile towards whoever is unfortunate enough to be in the way.

Draw strength: Draw strength is the pounds of force stored in the bow, and the bowstring. So 100 lbs of draw strength, is effectively 100 pounds of force,  so (With bows) you'll need to be able to pull back 100 lbs using arm/shoulder strength. The way the crossbow is designed, it uses a lever/crank system, making it much easier to pull back enormous amounts of draw strength. Note: The higher the draw strength, and the larger the crossbow, the more noise it will generate.

Arrows? No; bolts/Quarrel: Crossbows don't use arrows like bows do, and there is a difference between the two. Quarrel usually aren't as long as arrows, sometimes they can be heavier than arrows as well, especially if the crossbow firing it is a strong one (High draw strength). That is to add to the power, and penetrating quality of the bolt.

    Crossbow Variants:
    The Arbalest
    Arbalette-p1000546.jpg
A larger, 'newer', and more powerful version of the typical crossbow, there was no armour the arbalest couldn't pierce. Depending on design, and preference, the Arbalest used the windlass pulley system (As seen above.) It is placed on the ground, like you would normally load a crossbow and you  pull the cranks. It isn't the initial cranking that is the slow part. After you wind it up (And have the string pulled back) you take the windlass off, load a bolt and then can aim and fire (The arbalest tends to be loud.). To reload, you must unwind the windlass, re-attach it to the crossbow, crank, and then load it. Depending on how skilled you are, and how fast, I reckon you could get 2 bolts off in a minute. The draw strength of an arbalest can be quite high, the ones that use a windlass (For easier pulling) can be up to 1250 lbs of draw strength, sometimes higher.

    "Chu-ko-nu/repeating crossbow"
    The repeating crossbow
    zhugenu-payne.jpg
The Chu-ko-nu, more commonly known as the repeating crossbow, was created by the chinese to improve the firing speed of a crossbow. It has a magazine containing several bolts on the top of the bow, which aids in the rapid firing(the magazine, can be seen in the picture above as: A ). The repeating crossbow may be fired, and reloaded by simply pushing, and pulling on the lever (As seen above: C) one hand holds the crossbow handle, and the other: the lever. The weapon was extremely easy to manufacture and use, and, in the hands of a trained soldier, could easily launch ten bolts in fifteen seconds. Though, it has small and light ammunition, so its accuracy and power would pale greatly in comparison to the arbalest.

Now that we have the description of crossbows out of the way, I will explain how to apply to Roleplay, and a few basic rules to follow.

If you read the information provided, that will help in the use of a crossbow in Roleplay, however it is still a weapon, and some rules would apply to it.

Crossbows and commoners?: Because of the design of a crossbow, the military/guard are the ones who you will be seeing using it the most. They'd be fairly expensive, depending on the crossbow. Your 'regular' crossbow could be possible to get, probably for a more wealthy commoner. I doubt you'd be able to buy an arbalest, considering that it'd most likely be a military weapon. I doubt the violet order/guards would carry arbalests, it just isn't practical. The repeating crossbow would probably be expensive as well, and quite rare, it is a Chinese made weapon.

Shooting people:  Crossbows fire in more of a straight line than bows, making them more accurate in a way (In certain circumstances). The bolt flies fast, the crossbow produces kickback (Especially the arbalest), and it is noisy. Despite being more accurate in a straight shot, that doesn't mean you'd be able to fire into a crowd, and hit the one person you aim at. There is a chance you may hit them, but there is also a chance you may hit poor little johnny instead. Also, if you get hit by a crossbow bolt, it will hurt, it will possibly kill you (Depending on where it hit) and it certainly isn't something you can ignore easily.

Distance/range?: Just like any projectile, be it an arrow, a knife, etc.. It has a limited range, sure a crossbow can fire far, but eventually it'll lose speed and start to slow down, thus causing it to drop. Wind, and other weather changes can effect the bolt; while it does fly faster, and more powerfully than arrow it is still slower than a bullet (Bullets are still effected by wind, and such as well, just in case you didn't know).

Last note: Armour penatration: Depending on the distance, the draw strength, and the armour; the crossbow is more than capable of punching through most armour. Leather won't stop an arrow from a bow, so it won't stop a crossbow bolt, and neither will chain. Plate armour will keep you from being injured by an arrow from a bow, but not a crossbow (Especially if it is an arbalest). If you get shot by an arbalest, in the chest, you're dead.. Even if you are wearing pull plate.

I know it is a lot of information, but there you are.. If you have any questions, please ask. I also hope this helped you in gathering information on the crossbow, for Roleplay or otherwise.
  15. Thank you everyone else for your input too. I'm confident that I can be a high performing GM, unfortunately, the majority of the people do not wish for me to become staff. I understand your concerns, yet I feel that I already have decent grip on how the server operates. However it is still up the the staff on whether my application is rejected or accepted. Thank you.

  16. 7 days it seems, some people have been active for years and still don't get accepted. Not to say that you can be a GM, you just need to prove yourself first, it's not been nearly enough to to set any sort of example.

Stay a while and prove you're a member of the community, maybe join one of the other teams first. Don't just rush to the top. Not saying you can't be a GM, it's just you're practically a stranger.

    -1

Thank you for this constructive criticism, Matto. I feel that even though I lack veterancy that I will be able to properly perform the role of a GM. I would have applied for a different department, however they are not exactly my cup of tea. Should there be an opening for the Lore Staff I'd be more than happy to apply for that. I have infact a good experience becoming a staff member while being new, yet being successful in my endeavors as staff.
