  3. oh I'm sorry. I guess I thought this forum was so the Magic team would know what magic items are floating around out there.

Well if someone wants to close this or remove it they can then.

  7. This is an explanation of the Library of Sutica's defensive, magic booby trap.

upon descending into the underground chamber, one would see that the floor has been paved with tiles. In their center is a large mana gem. Any practitioner of voidal magic would be able to tell that the floor is heavily enchanted. Also, above the floor, near the ceiling floats a collection of heavy stone slabs.

The stones are held up by a telekinetic enchantment. The floor is enchanted to cast an abjuration to cancel the telekinetic spell should anyone take more than 3 steps across the floor, or stand on it for more than 3 seconds. Furthermore, the floor's enchantment is fixed with a verbal trigger that can disrupt the magic for a short time. That verbal trigger is known only to the Librarian at present.

The floor is also warded against abjuration by a T5 ward.

The walls to either side are made of stone and topped with sharp iron blades.

The falling stone, if triggered, would be heavy enough to crush the skull of anyone beneath them.

The unwelcome guest, or thieving interloper would find to their dismay that once they have entered the chamber, the only way out is across the trap itself.

  8. Gallidron stands upon his balcony and scowls down at the city. As he broods, a man from the flyer company approaches and clears his throat.

"Mr. Elindrow, the flyers have been posted, though our runners report that some people are responding negatively to the your statement." The man says as he stands a few feet behind Gallidron.

The curator continues to stare out at the city stretching before him. "Go on." He prompts without looking at the other person.

The man approaches the tall elf's left side as he continues his report. "Mostly it's some confusion as to the meaning, though there was a hypercrital individual that felt the need to fix a small typo." He finishes and waits for Gallidron to respond.

After a moment the curator breathes deeply. "So long as my message is recieved by the gutter trash who broke into the library, I do not care." He finally turns and faces the man. "It does not surprise me though." He gestures broadly out at the city. "They are a silly people."

  9.

[!] Flyers are posted in every city with this message. (boy they must spend a fortune on flyer printing)

To whomever took it upon themselves to invade my library,

I do not pretend to know who you are. Furthermore I find your note regarding “Never crossing you again” to be yet more more perplexing, as I can’t remember crossing anyone save a delusional beggar who accosted a steward of the fine City of Sutica. Nonetheless, Let it be known to all who can read this notice, (which likely leaves out most of your tiresome little band) That we of the Grand Library of Sutica, and more specifically myself, Gallidron Elindrow, are not intimidated nor amused.

If you have a problem with me, I suggest you try something other than your cheap scare tactics. And just so we’re clear, given the chance I will “cross you” at every turn.

    Yours,

    Gallidron Elindrow

What magic(s) will you be teaching?: Alteration

Summarize the Lore of this magic(s):

    Transmutation -

This branch of Alteration comprises the changing of material's physical form. One can change the material's shape, size, or even its composition in some cases. An alterationist can also heat or cool items with this magic. It is important to always consider the law of equal exchange. A pound of iron will always be a pound of iron even if you 'seemingly' make it larger. In reality, you have only expanded the mass, not made more of it. In the cases of fusing and fission, should a mage know what something is made of, they can either combine several materials into a finished product or tear them apart into their respective components. Whatever the case, the mage must understand the material they are working with to a detailed degree. Oh, and you can't transmute living material.

    Enchanting -

Perhaps the most nebulous form of magic in LOTC. It gives a large amount of creative license to the enchanter to do what they will, however there are some red lines and guide lines. One must at least understand the magic they are imbuing something with, and it would be better if they practiced it. In the case of a lack of knowledge I would suggest a co-enchantment o working with another mage who knows more about the desired effect. An enchanted item does not require a mana gem, but it is a good idea to have one. A mana gem being anything from a stone to a fine gem that is used as a reservoir for mana to power the enchantment. Mana gems can hold more energy the finer quality and larger size that they are and they can be replenished time and again. If the energy runs out, the enchantment will go dormant.

    Warding and Abjuration -

The dispelling and defense against magic. An Abjuration is cast in the moment and 'hurled' at the spell you wish to stop. A ward is placed and can be used to cancel larger or more varied spell work, assuming that you have prepared it sufficiently. In essence, a ward is prepared ahead of time and powered (through mana gems usually) and left in a location as a defense system, whereas an abjuration is the 'self-defense' of the mage. Regardless a mage must understand the magic to be dispelled and or warded against. Furthermore, relative power plays a part in this as a tier 2 abjurist may not have the power necessary to dispell the magic of a master mage. For more on this read Gallidron's book "The Abjurist".

Write up a lesson that your character would give to a student:

Gallidron sits across his desk from his student with his hands neatly folded.

"Given that you are just beginning in your training as an Alterationist I have elected to give you a relatively easy task." He says with an even and cultured tone. "You already know how to connect to the void so we will skip that part of the instruction and move straight to theory and then try a practical application." Gallidron then opens a drawer in his desk and pulls forth a lump of plain, gray clay. He hefts it in his hand as though testing its weight before setting it in the middle of the desk, equidistant from himself and the student.

"You will want to familiarize yourself with the subject matter. A Transmuter needs to be completely aware of that which they are trying to change. Indeed, you will find knowledge and familiarity to be the watchwords of Transfiguration in general."  Gallidron would then sit back as the student reaches a hand forward and plucks the clay from the table. The young mage tests the weight, he squished it between his fingers and familiarizes himself with texture and the elasticity of the clay. He feels the moisture in its form and even stops to smell it before setting the clay back down.

"Are you sufficiently knowledgeable about your medium?" Gallidron asks as he steeples his fingers. The student considers the question for a moment before nodding in the affirmative. "Very well," Gallidron states, "I would like you to simply make an indention in the clay, by all accounts a simple task." Gallidron leans forward in his chair. "Form in your mind what you want to happen, picture it with the utmost detail and when you have it, connect to the void and force your will into shape there."

The student nods again and closes his eyes. He focuses for several minutes in absolute silence. Then, he suddenly goes still before opening his eyes to reveal a slight glow emitting from them. Gallidron speak in nearly a whisper. "Do you have it?"

    The student nods almost imperceptibly.

"Good, now bring your magic here, manifest your will and your vision for the clay from the void." The student reaches forward and lays a single finger on the clay and concentrates. For a long moment nothing happens, sweat beads on the young man's forehead and his breathing becomes harsh. Then, slowly, an indention begins to form in the top of the lump of clay. It is small, no bigger than the young mage's thumb and only an inch deep, but it is there.

With a gasp, the young man drops his connection to the void and the indention fades as the clay takes its original shape. Gallidron's lips part in a small smile. "Congratulations, you have succeeded. The magic will, of course, become easier with time. This will conclude our lesson today, but take the clay with you and practice molding it with transmutation. We will convene again in 3 days."

  14. Greetings from the Grand Library of Sutica. We would like to formally apologize for the sheer number of flyers that were sent out. We knew something was wrong when a report reached us of a halfling being buried under a mountain of the things. Evidently, first responders barely got to him in time. The company who sent the flyers has been reprimanded and we have taken steps to ensure this never happens again.

  17. I have decided to create a work based on the generally accepted progression standards of Telekinesis. It should help to have everything in one place.

    Telekinesis

    A Guide to Progression

Telekinesis, as a voidal magic, progresses in a not dissimilar fashion to other voidal magics. One starts their journey as an apprentice, struggling to accomplish even minor feats. Eventually, however, skill is acquired and more and more can be drawn forth from the void. This guide is to help the prospective student, the new caster or even the fledgling instructor to create a framework for safe and reliable progress. In essence a lesson plan.

To begin we shall simplify this progression by creating an arbitrary ranking system. We’ll say that a novice is rank 1 and a master is rank 5. Ideally as a teacher one should be a master of the magic being taught and telekinesis is no different.

A rank 1 student will begin by being unable to do much at all. I was only able to barely move a feather on my first attempt and I had already mastered Transmutation before taking up Telekinesis. (It should help to note that if a student takes up Transmutation before other forms of magic, it tends to deepen their mana reserves.) After some practice however a rank 1 telekinetic will be able to reliably manipulate up to 4 or 5 small objects, each weighing no more than half a kilogram, or 1.1 pounds each. Be careful though as their focus can be easily broken. This progression should last 1 or 2 elven weeks.

Moving on to a rank 2 telekinetic, the student can begin to test themselves against more difficult tasks. Whether they focus on moving more items at once or simply on heavier items is up to you the teacher, but I would not ask them to lift anything heavier than 12 kilograms, or 26.5 pounds, at once. The strain may prove impossible for them and set them up for failure. This progression should last about 2 or 3 elven weeks, making the student ready to begin rank 3 training after about an elven month of total training.

Rank 3 will see the student’s still increase in very noticeable ways. Their speed and dexterity with the objects manipulated will show a great deal more prowess. Items of slightly weightier can be lifted though I would only expect them to lift up to 50 kilograms, 110.2 lbs., reliably. Heavier objects can be moved, though with some difficulty I would wager. This progression usually lasts around 1 or two elven months.

As a Rank 4 telekinetic your student will truly begin to come into their own. They are less an apprentice at this stage, than a mage who is honing a hard won skill. Much of their training can now be performed on their own, with only the odd bit of wisdom or bit of advice coming from you, their once all important teacher. Upon reaching rank 4 I was able to lift 80 kilograms or so, 176.4 pounds, with only a moderate amount of focus. The telekinetic’s skill will greatly increase, should they practice, over the next 2 elven months. It is not uncommon to see them jump from 80 kilograms to around 200 kilograms of movable weight in that time.

Rank 5 is the rank of the master. Your skill and your knowledge are truly formidable and you know well the uses of this arcane art. Around 300 kilograms, 661.4 pounds of weight is the average for new telekinetic masters but this will increase as you ply your craft. A rank 5 who uses their skill regularly can expect to see a 5 kilogram, 11 pounds, per elven week increase in their weight maximum.

It is important to note that throughout these progressions, a telekinetic will find their ability to focus, even through numerous and raucous interruptions, increase. On the average, about ⅕ of a mage’s total weight limit can be manipulated with true speed and dexterity, and 1/10 of their maximum weight can be manipulated with dazzling speed and prowess once one has achieved real skill.

I hope this book has been of use to you the reader and I encourage you to always seek to improve your knowledge.

    -Gallidron Elindrow

    Easy reference guide

Rank 1: up to five objects each weighing no more than ½ kg. 1-2 weeks

    Rank 2: 12kg. 2-3 weeks

    Rank 3: 50kg. 1-2 months

    Rank 4: Progression from 80kg to 200kg. 2 months

Rank 5: 300kg starting. 5kg gain each week

  18. ATTENTION ALL

The Books have returned to the Shelves in the Grand Library of Sutica! No longer will one need to search for the Librarian to read a book. To Celebrate we are holding a competition. We are looking a for new Bestiary books and guides. We will be accepting books submissions for the next two elven weeks. First place will receive a choice of 3 Prizes! First an enchanted blade known as "Kraken Fang". Second is strange item, "The Pumpkin of the Beholder's Gaze". Third is a cache of 250 Minas!
