Mathias was born in Presa de Madera on 17 Snow’s Maiden, 1662 to a middle-class family. While his younger years were spent revering knights, adventurers, and the such (as many children do), he spent his teens interested in trade and commerce. He would spend afternoons listening to the bells of ships in the port or walking the streets of the city market. During this time, Mathias frequently read various novels about trading and learned about the geography of Atlas. When he was 19, he applied for a job with a local merchant and, lucky for him, he was accepted for the position. Sure, Mathias knew many things about the business of commerce from his books, but he lacked the hands-on experience which the job would give him. He spent a few years working for this merchant, but unfortunately for Mathias said merchant left Santegia in 1693, leaving him out of a job.
