In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: I typically gauge what exactly my character is capable of doing and the limits of his/her abilities, and see if they are able to successfully endure or perform said actions. A magic healer whose adept at performing magic but struggles at melee combat would not win a fight against a knight. Such is the case for setting flaws that help define that character thoroughly.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming can completely ruin the experience by granting an advantage to the folks that are abusing knowledge that they shouldn't have. If there's a couple characters engaging in a fight, and if there's reinforcements coming along to wipe out the opposing side, it wouldn't make much sense for the enemies to know of incoming reinforcements unless it's A. Already too late. B. Warned in character by another person. Or C. The players learned about it ooc.

Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"I'm just traveling along-" Hazel pulled back the reins on her horse, stopping the ashen creature in it's place. "Perhaps stoppin' buy to sell my wares too, while I'm at it. In these certain times, with war brewin' around every corner of the land, it won't hurt to help sharpen up ya tools or buy a new one to keep yourself safe." Hazel leaned out to the side, hopping off her horse and stroking the horse's neck. Hazel grinned, her blue and green eyes making eye contact with the older woman. The younger woman brushed off any dirt off the cushion, before taking a seat.

"My story? Well... It ain't exactly the most exhilarating or grandiose tale. Grew up in a small mountain town for a bit. My father- bless his heart- was a damn good merchant. Did a lot of travelin' and sellin' wares all across the land. My mother was a teacher- an' the only reason how I'm able to form a sentence with all sorts of words that makes me sound smart. Rarely got to see him growin' up, but he kept food on our plates, an' told all sorts of stories on his times out sellin'. Also taught me more than enough lessons on how to haggle with all different types of folks- big, small, green, long eared- anythin' ya can think of." Hazel leaned back, easing into the cushion behind her. "Course, he made his coin sellin' food and rare necessities, which is good enough to sell and make money, but it was safe." She leaned over with a grin, her hand holding up her head. "Now, ya take a couple years to learn how to forge a weapon, keep it maintained an' in fighting condition, and ya have somethin' that'll make more coin than ever. I spent a couple years learnin' the craft, and I decided to forge (excuse the pun) myself a different path than my father. Smithin' and sellin' em on the go." She stood up onto her feet, kicking her feet against the ground. "Now, if that satisfies your question, perhaps you'll also be interested in a weapon or two?"
