How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is when a player uses his personal knowledge to guide the decisions of his character. For example, I, the player, might know where the King of the Elven Kingdom lives, but this information is probably lost on my human blacksmith character.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming refers to the tendency of players to ascribe god-like qualities to themselves. Instances of powergaming include the use of emotes to definitively and decisively impose their in-game will, granting their opponents no opportunity to counter, refute, or challenge their actions. The powergamer is seemingly immune to any and all attacks or obstacles, whether they be from the sword, a sorcerer, or reality itself.

Botar surveyed the well-dressed man with questioning eyes. "Adventure, wealth, and an elevated place in society."

The man's face stretched into a clearly rehearsed grin, which almost looked painful to Botar. "Well, Sir, you've certainly come to the right place! I'm sure you heard that the streets were paved with GOLD in this town, eh?"

Botar stared blankly at the man. "I hadn't heard that."

"Well, it's true! You see, I have a shop full of trinkets and devices sure to shock your rural compatriots! Now, if you'd please follow--"

The man began to turn around, leading Botar in the direction of the bazaar. Botar began to oblige, allowing him to lead the way, then stopped. He turned around, disappearing into the crowd and away from the well-dressed man. Botar didn't have time for a sales pitch today.
