How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Avoiding powergaming in roleplaying requires a mature and collaborative approach to the craft. Starting with character creation, it requires one to design a character that is not overpowered and has inherent flaws, as any individual would do, and that avenues to becoming 'stronger' are realised through a progression arc, and not by a deus-ex-machina moment, ("e.g., I was written by a radioactive spider and now have superpowers!"). Furthermore, it's critical that one is collaborative when it comes to storytelling with others; interaction should be back and forth, with invitations to respond from the other player, not a dictated outcome. Additionally, powergaming can be further avoided by taking a descriptive, rather than prescriptive approach to actions, to ensure that there is room for a variety of outcomes and one does not simply 'railroad' to their preferred outcome everytime.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming pulls apart the fabric of accepted illusion that makes roleplay possible. Through individuals breaking the 'fourth wall' (this time in reverse), and providing information to characters they would have no way of finding out within the information avenues they have access to in the world, the entire storytelling premise and flow of the roleplaying environment breaks down. It's critical that even if one might stumble across information that a character could 'benefit' from, unless it is absolutely plausible the character might encounter this information in the course of their experience of the world, acting on it creates an unfair platform vis-a-vis other roleplayers, and erodes the inherent collective trust we as roleplyers have that makes the experience fun.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"Thank you," Arthur began, his voice steady despite the unease that danced in his stomach. "My name is Arthur Fontaine. I hail from a bustling trade city far from here, where my family's name is known amongst the markets and trading posts. My father, a merchant of some renown, and my mother, an herbalist with a touch of... let's say, unspoken talents, have shaped the man you see before you.

"I've spent my life amidst the clatter of commerce, the scent of spices and the rustle of silk. Yet, amidst the wealth and abundance, I've always felt a void, an unquenchable thirst for something beyond the tangible, the material. My mother's discreet teachings, the subtle art of herbs that heal not just the body, but perhaps the soul, hinted at a world beyond our commercial grasp."

"I come to this... unique town, not for trade or material pursuits, but in search of knowledge, of power that I believe is my destiny to wield. Magic, the arcane arts, call it what you will—I seek to master it, to fill the void that worldly goods cannot."

He let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding, the candlelight flickering as if in response to his confession.

"My journey is not just about personal gain. I've seen the disparities, the injustices that plague our lands. With the power I seek, I aim to right wrongs, to protect those who cannot protect themselves." His gaze moves into the distance, his eyes almost glazed over with his own visions of the life he wishes to lay before him, before he jerks back to the crone. "But first, I must learn, I must grow."
