Tantalus would like to follow the third option, but to tell this pompous oaf his intentions without getting to know him at first seemed like it would be a mistake. Trying to goad him into revealing key bits of info without disclosing Tantalus’ goals seemed like it would be the best course of action. Of course, should that fail, there was always the direct aproach. So he would most likely respond with “Just looking for work friend, do you know of any persons of higher standing who might need my services as a scribe?” Tantalus would then try to appear to be a scribe trying to find out more about potential employers, when in actuality gathering intelligence on whatever opposition he might face in the city, or who might be allies, or customers to whatever services he may be able to provide them, not just in scribing. He would also likely try to bribe the man as well, further playing the part of the scribe/whatever other job looking for work.
