You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”
((How do you respond?))
"Oh! Ahem. I suppose, ah, things got a bit out of hand..." I glance around the hut once more, nose wrinkling slightly. I fidget with my hands. "You see, I like to learn new things and ah--read a lot. I spent a lot of time at home, as you might expect. My parents didn't really want me leaving the house anyway." I laugh awkwardly. "I--well, as I said, things may have gotten out of hand, I'm still not quite sure how I ended up here, but all I wanted was to see the world for myself..." I study her for a moment. "Do you--do you know magic? I've always been fascinated with it, but I never could convince my parents to find me a teacher."

How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: To avoid it, the important thing is to keep in mind what the character can do and what they know. Anything I, the player, knows but the I, the character, doesn't, can't influence my roleplaying. Also, respecting the RP rules-If I can't do something, or I must make a check (and potentially fail), I must respect that outcome.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: It leads to an imbalance, especially with a friend or someone I would have talked with ooc. If I know something about them or their character that mine does not, I could make a decision that works in my favor unduly. For example, my character and theirs might both be really good at swordfighting, so my character may wish to do that, but if I knew that they were *especially* weak with magic, I could use that against them and win unfairly.
