In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Everyone occasionally gets the urge to do something powergamey or godmodey from time to time. Personally I always have a list of character traits handy, for me to refer back to whenever I want to take any actions, I simply skim through it and remind myself what exactly my character is capable of/what they would do in this moment, all based on my cheat sheet. I also make an active effort to leave my actions open ended, so that other people can resolve and build off of what I say in whatever way they desire. Roleplaying is a group experience, it kills the fun for everyone else when someone tries to steal the spotlight by powergaming, so if I were to see someone else doing that I would gently remind them that they need to let other people participate, and if they continued powergaming, I would just ignore them.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming is, in my opinion, one of the most boring things you can do when roleplaying. It's easy and instinctual to assume that the character you are playing knows everything that you the player know, but that's almost never true. Metagaming inherently gives you an unfair advantage, it results in your character acting on knowledge that they don't have. The fun part of roleplaying is putting yourself in your character's shoes and weighing choices based on what they know, if you use knowledge from outside the game, you ruin that fun for yourself and for others by giving yourself an advantage you shouldn't have.
