Kale grew up in a large town in the Kingdom of Santegia along with his brother Elliot, who was born only 2 years after Kale was. Kale was mostly adrift throughout his life with no motivation of his own to drive him and no real goals he wanted to achieve. Because of this Kale was often mocked relentlessly by others either by children his age or adults who expected more from him, especially his parents. Kale was forced to learn his father's trade as a cobbler while he was young but of course it was of no interest to him. In order to escape the responsibilities of inheriting his father's work, Kale joined the local guard when was 14 though not out of some love for his home or a desire to uphold justice and law but as an excuse to do as little as possible while still working. Kale would be an utterly useless human being if it weren't for his brother. Kale loved nothing more in the world than his little brother and always kept an eye out for him, often getting into scraps as a kid against anyone who dare upset his dear Elliot. The one thing that gave him joy was watching Elliot grow up and become a better person than he ever could be. Elliot in turned looked up to Kale and all he did, blissfully unaware of Kale's layabout attitude. When Elliot was 14 he too joined the town guard in hopes of becoming like his older brother and with the brothers teaming up Kale became much more inspired to act like the hero his little brother saw him as.
Kale's happiest days came to an end only a few short months later.
While Kale and Elliot were on duty, a man looking quite frantic and pale as a ghost came yelling through the streets, demanding the attention of anyone who would listen. When the brothers stopped the man to ask him what was wrong, he explained through gasping breath and a stuttering voice that thought he witnessed a den of black magic tucked away in the forgotten corners of the town. Kale thought this was unlikely but decided to go investigate anyway figuring that if someone just went to go check then it would make the citizens feel better. So Kale set off with Elliot following close behind towards the house where the dark magic was reportedly being practiced. When they arrived at the building a few short knocks and a brief, silent pause confirmed that the building was no longer being lived in. Kale let himself inside and the brothers got to work investigating the house which quickly revealed all sorts of arcane tools and eldritch writings. None of which Kale understood, though he did find the mystery of it incredibly interesting. Though Kale didn't have much time to wonder about the dark secrets held in this house as the front door soon flung open once more with several older, tougher looking guards, none of which looked particularly pleasant. Kale turned towards them, not thinking anything of where he currently was and was about to explain that he and Elliot were simply responding to the concerns of a citizen, probably the same one that alerted the guards to this place.
Though the tough men, either by an honest misunderstanding or taking the convenient opportunity to rid the town of it's least favourite guardsman took Kale and Elliot to be the dark wizards in questions. Short words of panicked explanations and declarations of justice and purity were exchanged before Kale and Elliot were chased upstairs and fled by throwing themselves out of the upper window. With a hard thud on the ground and a quick scramble to their feet, Kale and Elliot dashed off in a random direction, the walls and buildings around them seeming to close in around them as though the entire town now tried to swallow them up and keep them from escaping. The streets were screeching with the sound of clattering metal and the steps of guards trying to cut off escape and capture the brothers. After being cut off and turned around countless times and the sound of angry guards closing in all around them Kale saw the only escape in the river cutting through the middle of the town. Without much other option Kale and Elliot tossed themselves into the cold waters and allowed the current of the river to carry them away. As Kale looked at the guards gathering on the bank of the river, he felt a wave of relief wash over him, sure he may be banished from the town as a heathen, but Kale wasn't particularly attached to this place to begin with. Besides as long as Kale had Elliot, he needed nothing else. Then Kale felt a cold smack against the back of his head as the waterway took him close under the town's wall and his vision went black.
When Kale came to, he found himself washed ashore on the banks far downriver. He had no idea where he was or long he had been out and he was covered in scrapes and bruises, the back of his head in particular was bleeding a bit probably from when he hit his head on the way out. His head was dizzy and he felt awful, but he was away and he was free. Most importantly, he had his brother. Wait, where was Elliot? Kale searched all around him but there was no sign of his younger sibling anywhere. Kale began to panic, the worst thing that could possibly happen. Kale was lost in every sense of the word without Elliot. He had no clue where he was or what he should do without his brother. Kale resigned himself to finding a tree and sobbing under it. Kale sobbed under the tree until he cried himself to sleep. When he awoke the next morning he took a moment to consider sobbing some more, but he couldn't, he was all out of tears. Instead Kale stared into space, thinking idly about what he could possibly do by himself. Kale's ultimate decision was that he would look for his brother. He didn't know where his brother was, where he was going or even if he was still... no, best not to think about that. Kale didn't know where to start, but he had to try, his first path would be further downriver.
It's been 4 years since Kale made his daring escape and lost his brother, to this day he still wanders looking for him, hopeful that eventually he will turn up. While Kale grows weary every day that passes, he still chooses to believe his brother is still out there. It's the only thing that can give him any hope anymore. At the same time, while Kale is certain his name and face have been all but forgotten by the town he was exiled from, he still feels he needs to be redeemed in the Church of Canon, or failing that, perhaps make a delve down a different path.
~~Some stuff I'd personally like to add~~
I know the entire thing was only supposed to be a paragraph long, but I sorta got carried away. I hope there's no penalty for a longer backstory.
I'm not sure if the lore I included was still relevant or if it was outdated, the wiki seems to be a bit of both, I'm open to suggestions to make the lore bits of my backstory more current.
And I'm Canadian, that's why I spelled favourite with an ou.
