You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”
((How do you respond?))
Ikarr's eyes widen in disbelief, as he pulls the chair towards himself and sits down. "Hello ma'am, I am a young farmer from the Principality of Reinmar. I have decided that I cant support my family, as the crops have done quite poorly this year. I've decided that I want to give more to Reinmar than wheat and potatoes. So, I've decided to become a soldier and serve with all of my ability. I am willing to lay my life on the line to provide for my family, and to bring honor to my homeland. Its simple, but my blade will not waiver on the battlefield when I remember what I'm fighting for."

How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Remembering some of my experience in D&D, you are not the main character. That is the beauty of it, everyone gets to exist and make the story together. Ill constantly remind myself that I am a part of an awful narrative. That narrative could come at the expense of my character, which will be cool. Mechanically, read the guidelines and try to strictly powerscale what my race and occupation can do. This isn't an anime, if i get my arm cut off, I wont get to come back with some crazy revenge idea. I will most likely bleed out and die. Forcing results on other players is also wrong. For example I cant say in a fight that i cut off their arm, i can only say that my blade slices their arm, and it is up to them to assess how much damage it would cause to their character.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: This ruins the entire point of roleplay. You are assuming the identity of an entirely different person, in an entirely different world. That means only acting off of information that the character knows, not you. It essentially tears down the integrity of the game, and spits on the purpose of roleplay in the first place.
