Herman would pause for a moment, startled by the fine fabrics that the man wore. It was unlike anything he had seen before, and he briefly considered how many years he would need to work just so he could buy the man's shoes before replying.
"Hello sir. I guess I'd say a little bit of everything?"
He would chuckle before continuing.
"I've never been to such a big city before. And it's...a lot."
The finely dressed man would gesture for Herman to follow.
"Well, that sounds about right. You rural folk all seem to react similarly during your first times. But you must have something you've come here for! Don't tell me you made the decision to come on a whim?"
He would say while creasing his eyebrow. Herman would quickly in surprise,
"No, no, nothing of that sort! I came to join the army. I've wanted to since I was just a little boy!"
The gentleman would mutter something about "suicidal youngsters" under his breath before pointing to the nearest enlistment office.
"Then you want to head that direction. And be careful, son, those generals sure love themselves a good, bloody war."
