    In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: I avoid powergaming by making sure what my character does always makes sense (within the scene) and doesn't suddenly do something that I'd wish would happen ooc but would never actually happen ic. I also avoid this by not using "coincidences" or "luck" to make some things happen, unless if there really was a case that my character was lucky (though likely in a small, comedic way, rather than a power blunt way).
    In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming spoils the experience for other people, whether it be their IC secrets, weaknesses, or anything that has to found out in character. There's little to no reason to watch a movie when you get spoiled for it, after all, unless if you'd be okay with watching a movie and being bored 70% of the time. Metagaming makes roleplayers feel less immerssed and involved, and the shroud of mystery and discovery is suddenly gone when people metagame.

Roleplay Scenario:

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

"Ah um..." Alaric says, scratching his head. He hesitantly sits on the cushion, putting his hands together and sighing before he continues. The young man doesn't quite trust this person, so he decides to be secretive with his speech.

 

"I... I'm a lost servant, miss. A very lost one." The man frowns a little before continuing. "You see... I don't know why I'm here. Last I remember, I was with... Those I served, on a ship. However, the boat capcized and I was knocked out... I woke up just a few hours ago at a beach, roughly east of this swamp. And right now... I still don't know what to do miss."

 

Alaric looks away, a bit ashamed and confused. "I... I don't know why you're expecting me, and neither do I know how you know me. But... I think you may have gotten the wrong person in mind, miss. A lot of other people are named Alaric, after all. But if it is me then... I don't have much to talk about. I'm just a servant who got lost. And I really, really need some help finding my way back home. Or perhaps, finding Lady Ly-" He stutters, "I mean, those I serve, yes. Apologies I'm... Just a bit on the edge right now."

Looking back at the lady, he smiles but with a hint of sadness. "Miss... Do you by chance know a place where I could stay nearby? Or possibly find work?"
