How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: I create characters that start with nothing and grows as the story continues, being able to fight a king born into war should never be an easy feat. I make my characters have clear flaws that that are relatable to me the player and others around me. My character might fly into a rage after being slighted and might go into a brawl, but they wont call lightning from the heavens because I said they would in RP unless they actually have the ability to do so, like a wizard would.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: It gives one player power over the others, accessing knowledge that would not be known to the character to further their own growth, while causing the players around them to feel left behind since they don't know everything that particular player does because they are newer to the game or haven't had the experience yet. Metagaming can also ruin the surprises that the storyteller is building up to, diminishing the overall experience for everyone involved.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"Oh, I just, uh…" you stutter, tensing up. You eye the crone, then back outside the tent. For a moment, the air thickens with anticipation, until…the loud sound of thunder shakes the ground outside. Rain falls, droplets smatter the sides of the tent. The pitter patter distracting Kelva for a moment before she turns back saying

"I just came here looking for the rest of my tribe. We were attacked and driven from our Valorhold. Most of them were..." She looks down for a moment, lips slightly quivering. She gives a large sniff, and regains her composure continuing, "I need to find the rest of them. Travelers I met a few days ago mentioned they saw a pack of orcs heading this way. So I am on the hunt."

The hags eyes focusing, she sees now the large woman sat across from her. The blue tattooing on her forehead signifying an intelligence and understanding more akin to a human than an orc. Her arms covered in tribal tattoos signifying strength and valor through hunts for large prey. The hag speaks "Ahhhh yes. I do believe I saw your tribe roughly 3 days ago. Big mean, and green, with similar markings like those on your forearms. Called themselves the...Heaven Caller tribe? No no it was the Stormbringers."

With visible excitement on her face Kelva thanks the hag and leaves the tent out into the rain. The hags calls out from the opening "They were headed east last I saw!" Before trailing off too quiet for Kelva to hear "...though they didnt quite look alive anymore..."
