You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

"Oh, uh hey." Your pulse quickens as you wonder where she knows you from. "My name's Nate, I'm on a conquest to meet all of the different races and see as a collective what we have to defeat the terrors of this world." You feel confident in front of the old woman, but also want to leave to continue your adventure. "I must ask, where did you say you know me from? You mentioned that you were.. expecting me."

How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Really immerse yourself into your character and if you're about to do something that seems sketchy, first think "If I was this person in real life, would I actually be able to do this?"
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming disrupts fair roleplay because there are some things that your in game character doesn't know, but you found out in real life so you technically know. You have to keep things you only find out in real life, and what your character actually knows completely separate to make the game fun and fair for you and others.
