Gunnar was born in the capital of Norland, Varhelm. His father was a cowardly man called Hadvar who sold milk, his mother died during childbirth and Gunnar has never gotten any information about her from Hadvar.
His father's milk selling business never did well and eventually he had to sell his cow farm, but after a while Gunnar and Hadvar became poor and could only afford food.
Hadvar's cowardice was often shown when he didn't stand up to thieves.
Because of the family's lack of money Gunnar couldn't afford to get proper education, but his father taught him about different kingdoms, religions and cultures.
One day, when Gunnar was 18, he saw Hadvar getting robbed, so Gunnar curled up his fists and tackled the thief to the ground. After a long, exhausting fight the thief ran away. Gunnar turned around only to see his father curled up in a ball like a coward. In that moment, Gunnar hated nothing in the world more than Hadvar. With an angry voice Gunnar said: ''I'm leaving.'' Hadvar said nothing and continued crying while Gunnar walked away. With all the remaining money Gunnar had, he bought some supplies and set off for a life of honor, respect, and fame.
Just when he started wondering where he was going to go, he saw a ship and decided to sneak his way onto it.
With an excited voice Gunnar responded: ''Fame!'' His voice quickly turned raspy ''But water first...''
