How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is the act of using information that your character would not know inside of roleplay. This info could be gathered from community forums, other roleplayers telling you about their experiences, or other Out-Of-Character chats. Metagaming is often used to gain a lot of power very quickly, allowing a simple farmer to acquire an ancient enchanted sword that gives him the right to be king.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming is the act of forcing your emotes onto other players. This is usually done on purpose as often as it is done on accident as less experienced roleplayers make poor quality emotes that unintentionally force an action or reaction onto their roleplay partners. An example would be, "Larry takes a piece of bread out of Derpy's hand." The emote should be something like, "Larry attempts to swipe Derpy's bread right out of his hands." Emoting that your character is attempting to do something rather than outright doing it allows your roleplay partners to react and means that more satisfying roleplay can occur.
