Rolf was born to Rutland and Amalie Gurning, a poor couple who lived on a farm on the outskirts of a thick forest. His father was a hunter, and taught Rolf to hunt as well. Rolf’s mother taught him to read and write, as well as to cook in a better way than his father’s patented “slap it on the fire and wait til it’s black” method. The cold winters of the land left Rolf feeling small and alone, thus he prefers the warmer days that summer brings. Rolf and his best friend Nuria spent many days exploring the forest together, searching the thick woods for the Tippen’s Root that Nuria’s mother required to act as their village’s healer. As they grew, Nuria learned the art of healing from her mother, tending to Rolf’s wounds many times. This friendship eventually grew into a mutual love and the two of them spent several years together. Their relationship came to an end when Nuria and her mother moved after the death of Nuria’s father. After Nuria left, Rolf was involved with a couple of other girls of his village, but these relationships did not last long. Hoping to escape his loneliness, Rolf joined some of the villagers in a local band, where he played the flute. As his parents grew in years, Rolf decided to hire on extra help around the farm. Two of his childhood friends, Torin and Arth joined him working the fields.

I take a step back, startled by the man. “I’ve come to trade, sir. I’ve brought herbs from the forests of Norland. My mother’s sick and my family needs the coin.”
