Tariq al-Sura was born in the sun-scorched reaches of the Farfolk lands, the second son of a traveling merchant family whose caravans had once crossed half the known world before the fall of Aevos. When his family finally settled on the new continent of Azuras, near the outskirts of the Empire of Man's Imperial Crownlands, Tariq grew up caught between two worlds — the old customs of his southern homeland and the rigid culture of the northern heartlanders around him. His father died of a fever when Tariq was barely a young man, leaving him with nothing but a battered trade ledger and a distrust of sitting still. With his older brother taking over what little remained of the family trade, Tariq found himself with no role and no place, so he packed a worn satchel and set out into Azuras alone. He seeks work, coin, and perhaps some fragment of purpose in a land still scarred by the chaos that destroyed the world before it.

Tariq stepped inside slowly, letting the door creak shut behind him, and lowered himself onto the offered chair with a cautious eye on the old woman. The candles above made him uneasy, but he said nothing of it.
"I come from the south," he said, his accent carrying the rounded tones of a Farfolk tongue. "My father is dead, my brother took what little we had left — so I walked." He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, meeting her gaze evenly. "As for what I hope to make of myself, I haven't decided yet. Something honest, if the world allows it." He paused, studying her weathered face. "You said you were expecting me. I'd like to know what that means before I decide whether to stay or walk back out that door."
