How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is a failure of immersion. This act manifests when the player's thoughts, emotions, values and knowledge suddenly appear in the character they are portraying despite it not making sense for the character.

A character knowing other characters' names because the player can read them on the screen of the game. A character knowing someone else's character details because the player read them on a forum or any other OOC place. A character having deep scientific knowledge by modern standards just because the player does. So on and so forth, there are quite many examples to bring up.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming (or godmodding as it is sometimes referred to) is the act of unnaturally empowering your character to be able to do impossible feats or breaking the set rules of the IC universe. It is easily avoided by actually setting up and developing a piece of believable narrative to where your character actually acquires or develops said skills. Like a character at first being unable to lift a stone because they aren't strong enough, so they set out on a journey to build up their strength or practice lifting heavy things so that they can.

It should be noted however that a character achieving godly powers in a world where it is impossible to do so obviously can't work towards that goal or change that about themselves.

Eidryk looked the man over from head to toe, his blue eyes studying the clothing that, to him, seemed very outlandish. He returned a bit of a hesitant smile, nodding to the gentleman in a gesture of acknowledging his presence. "Thanks," he answered briefly to the welcome before pondering over the questions asked. "I'm just here to sell my goods, I guess," he gestured towards the heavy sack thrown over his shoulder. "Got enough cured meat to keep a family happy for a long time."
