    How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is when you use knowledge and insight from the real world that your character in the rpg wouldn't have or have been able to know within their storyline. For example, if one is an entry level farming human, they shouldn't/wouldn't know any magical spells or special battle tactics against a certain monster/encounter/race, etc.
    How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming is playing an rpg in way that focuses on personal improvement and optimization over the enjoyment of the storyline, over making the game more realistic, and over the betterment of the community - all for their personal gain. It's a way of manipulating the gameplay to always favor you when possible, whether it be making what you want to happen in the rpg happen without the consent or approval of all parties involved or engaging in the world that only focuses on that individual player's material and social benefit. I would sum it up by saying it is playing incredibly selfishly, e.g. living for materialistic concerns over relationship with others or forcing others to engage in rp that they don't want to participate in such as combat or sexual activities.

I look skeptically at the nicely-dressed gentleman, confused. With my sword and tools on my back and my lack of nice clothes, I was clearly a freelancer looking for work.  I couldn't figure out whether he was going to try to sell me something or swoop me into some con, but I knew that anyone being so friendly to an ragged, travel-weary dwarf like me clearly didn't come with honest prospects. "My business is my own." My stomach starts to growl, so loud that it's definitely audible. "... but I could use some food and ale..." I sighed. "And work. I'm looking for work. Does this lovely city have a tavern nearby?"
