 Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Their gaze shifted to the offered seat, a flicker of hesitation crossing their face before they stepped forward. “Oh, thank you for being kind enough to offer me a seat,” they said, their voice calm but tinged with curiosity. Kneeling, they brushed a thin layer of dust from the cushion, the gesture deliberate, as if testing the hag’s patience. Their sharp eyes remained fixed on her, watching for any subtle shift in her demeanor.

Lowering themselves onto the cushion, they kept their posture composed, back straight but not rigid, as though unwilling to show discomfort in the eerie surroundings. A faint smile at their lips, polite yet guarded, the kind one might offer to a stranger whose motives were unclear.

“I must say,” they began, their tone light but edged with curiosity, “it’s not every day someone claims to be expecting me before I even show. How long have you known I’d be coming?” The candles’ flickering glow cast shadows across their face, making their expression unreadable as they awaited the her answer. 

“As for your request,” they began, their voice steady but reflective, “I’ll tell you what I can. I was born to the woods—trees that stretched endlessly and whispered secrets in the wind. My earliest memories are of the earth beneath my feet and the songs of birds high in the canopy. Nature was my first teacher, my first love, and it shaped me in ways I’m only beginning to understand.”

They paused, their gaze momentarily drifting to the flickering candles, their thoughts seeming far away. “But life doesn’t always follow the path we imagine. Does it? In time, I found myself among books instead of trees, trading the rustle of leaves for the quiet hum of parchment and ink. I became a librarian, content for a while with the simplicity of a life spent learning. Yet... even as the years passed, something stirred within me. A restlessness. A yearning.”

Their eyes met the hag’s once more, their expression unreadable yet tinged with curiosity. “Now, I findmyself drawn to something greater, though I cannot name it. Perhaps it’s the call of the woods I left behind. Perhaps it’s something altogether different. What I seek, I do not yet know. But I suspect you might have some insight into the journey ahead.”

The woods were his playground and his teacher, offering lessons in balance, resilience, and the quiet harmony of life. He wandered freely among towering trees, listening to the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of unseen creatures, finding comfort and purpose in the solitude of the wild.

But his path took a turn when a wandering scholar passed through the forest, their stories of distant lands and written knowledge awakening a curiosity within him. Drawn by the allure of learning, he left the woods behind and found a new life among books. As a librarian in a quiet village, he dedicated himself to preserving the knowledge of others, cataloging tomes, and transcribing forgotten tales.

For years, he found solace in the simple rhythm of his work. Yet, despite the quiet satisfaction it brought, he began to feel a growing restlessness. The call of the forest, distant but insistent, tugged at the edges of his mind, stirring dreams of shadowy trees and the freedom he once knew. More than that, a deeper yearning awoke within him—a desire for something beyond the pages of books or the solitude of the woods.
