Hug is far from the perfect specimen of an Orc, having been weaker and smaller than many of his Uruk peers since birth. It quickly became apparent that Hug was a bit of a phenomenon among his clan, preferring the company of Goblins to that of the Uruks from which he was born. He would spend most of his childhood trying to play with Goblin children (among which he was usually the biggest one, something he took no small amount of pride in), or watching wistfully as the Goblins worked but retaining nothing. He would often avoid fighting practice, and when he did fight he was clearly the weakest of the lot. Despite this behaviour and a growing disdain for the Uruk way of life, Hug was never formally trained in the ways of engineering or allowed to fully immerse himself in Goblin life, instead becoming stuck in a sort of limbo between Goblin and Orc, as either a small Orc who couldn’t fight or a larger Goblin who couldn’t build. 

As Hug grew older, his instinct for bloodlust and his lack of any outlet would often culminate in quick bursts of anger directed at other Uruks, which more often than not would then result in him receiving a firm beating from whoever he might have scorned. The longer time wore on, the more determined he became to leave his clan and live life as a traveler, but often he would come to the brink of leaving for good and instead get cold feet, returning to the tribe with his head hung after an hour or less of absence. Finally, at the age of late 18, he was given a gift by one of his last remaining childhood friends. A Goblin himself, Krent approached Hug as he was recovering from his most recent (and worst) trouncing. Krent never spoke a word, solemn and perhaps ashamed of Hug as he looked his bandaged body up and down for the last time, before dropping a simple leather satchel on the Orc’s lap and leaving. Inside, was a pair of rusty goggles with each glass missing (likely plucked from a pile of junk), and just about two days worth of provisions. Though not a word had been spoken, and Hug was never the brightest Orc in the first place, he took the hint. The next day, still far from fully healed, Hug hobbled out of the hut and onto the beaten path just outside his tribe’s territory. Still unable to fight properly, still unable to build anything worthwhile, and still almost completely untrained, Hug donned his goggles and never looked back. He would become an inventor.

Hug would still be roaming through Krugmar, but has aspirations to leave the Orcish Nation entirely and travel the world.
