In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: There are various ways to avoid powergaming. Most commonly, actions that could involve or affect other characters, should be written open-endedly, usually in the form of ''attempts'', allowing the involved parties to affect the outcome, and thus, retaining their agency in the roleplay.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: High-quality roleplay comes from character development, in the form of character flaws and flawed actions, lack of knowledge, and then overcoming these obstacles through various means. By metagaming, one can make optimal choices through having information that their character shouldn't have, which not only is an unfair advantage against fair roleplayers, but also hinders or prevents character development.

Character Name: Varen of Norland
Character Race: Highlander
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 25
Physical Description: Varen possesses a physique quite average for a Highlander, measuring at 5'9" and 190 lbs, having brown hair and brown eyes, with no facial hair.
Roleplay Scenario:

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"My story, eh..? I don't have a drink to offer you, so bear with me." Varen spoke while looking around awkwardly. "You see, I had high expectations once. To raise a sword, to draw a bow, to earn glory.." As Varen continued, he took a seat at a nearby chair, letting out a sigh as he did so. "But, times are rough, as you know." He continued, a sad expression taking over his face. "Minae. It's always Minae. Food, housing, not to mention, who's going to pay for all of that equipment?" He laughed, looking at the old hag briefly. "So I took on some work at an inn. It was meaningless labor at first, many a month until I was allowed to serve drinks behind the counter. When I finally did, I heard so many stories past and old, tales from yesteryear, myths from ages long gone. I counted my Minas, hoping to one day have my chance to be on the other end, sharing my own stories." As Varen continued, his foot was tapping the floor nervously. "I.. I.. the last few days, they've been a lot. I still haven't processed the events fully, but this isn't how I saw things going. All those years saving up for supplies and a blade, I finally left my hometown come Snow's Maiden, only to be robbed by bandits - not even before Sun's Smile. Can you believe that? I mean, seriously, what are the guards getting paid to do?" Realizing that he is rambling at this point, he stutters and gets back on track. "I-I mean, all I could do was run. So I did, I ran until the cold breeze of Norland had my fingers numb, never looking back. I don't know when they stopped followi- I- I don't even know if they did stop following me!" Varen's eyes suddenly widened - "Hold on.. expecting me..? You- You aren't associated with them are you? What- Who are you, really? I've done enough talking here!

((OOC additions below))
I intend for Varen to begin as a weak, open-ended character, with adventurer ambitions. Perhaps Varen will befriend a dwarf or an elf, and it will steer his talents towards one direction or another. He could start learning how to use a bow, before losing a limb in battle due to inexperience, and having to lean on a one-handed blade instead.  I'm very open to roleplay events having tangible effects on my character, which is why I don't want Varen to start off with immediate drastic traits for the sake of standing out or attention, aspects unique to Varen should be acquired through actual events taking place in roleplay. Similarly, Varen will start off with poor, dirty, broken looking clothing, as I don't believe in starting a character off as a nobility - Varen would have to earn such a fortune, for he isn't that lucky.
