How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is a failure of roleplaying. It is playing your character optimally for game mechanical purposes rather than faithfully to the knowledge and resources they possess in the game's fiction. It spoils the fiction of the game by integrating out-of-universe information and resources where it could not be reasonably anticipated by other players.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming is another failure of roleplaying. It is imposing dissonant levels of ability on your character's interactions, or forcing scenes/encounters to play out according to your own vision without allowing other players space to influence the outcome of an encounter proportionate to their characters' abilities and resources. And it spoils the fiction for all players by creating "Mary Sue"s when flawed and imperfect characters are more narratively interesting.

A broad, earnest smile spreads across Kethra's face. She steps forward, a bit too close, takes the man's hand in both of her own and shakes it eagerly. The words come in a torrent, too fast for the man to reply.
"Hi! I'm Kethra! Oh, I'm SO excited to be here in the city. Is it as big as they say it is? I heard there are festivals - is there a festival now? I would love to go to a festival. Although ti's hard to believe a city could be any more interesting than this one already is. It's so, SO much bigger than the convent."
She pauses a moment to breathe, and feels suddenly self conscious.
"Oh! I'm sorry. That was a lot. The sisters used to tell me that I could kind of be a lot sometimes. What's your name?"
And then the moment of self-awareness passes, as quickly as it came, and she motors on without a pause once again.
"My name is Kethra! Did I already tell you that? I think I did. I'm looking for lost people. Do you know where I could find some? Or...er..." She purses her lips in thought, dropping the man's hand. "I suppose if you knew where I could find them, they wouldn't be lost, would they? Hrmm... This is going to be a lot harder than I thought."
