How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: To ground yourself into the reality of the setting and understanding the limitation and extent that would be for your character. If I was a dwarve I would understand that I would have height disadvantages and be more stubborn. As well avoid making the character a Mary sue, a character should have faults and areas it shines in. Such as a wizard that excels in spells but lacks physical strength to counter act using magic. And vis versa if I was a warrior I would not be expected to be well versed in mage craft,
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: It ruining the emersion and creates a setting where you know something you shouldn't. It also means you are setting yourself to be in an advantage that you wouldn't overwise and ruins others roleplay experience. If someone was a spy and you were told in an OOC manner, and then use that knowledge in character, you would ruin that characters and players roleplay over using OOC manners to undermine their efforts. Another example would be war planning, if you are informed oocly of a war plan of an enemy and then use that knowledge, it isn't legitimate defeat, and ruins that players and other factions planning.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Example:

"Aye, well met, ye ol' crone," Agnarr Saddleback grumbles in his deep, gravelly voice, eyeing the dimly lit tent with suspicion. The scent of rotted wood and wet moss makes his nose twitch, but he finds a vacant cushion and reluctantly takes a seat. Adjusting the weight of his warhammer, he leans forward, his fiery amber eyes fixed on the hag.

"I'm Agnarr Saddleback, a dwarf seekin' enlightenment and desperate not to be like me father. Grimli Saddleback, he succumbed to the curse of greed, lost everythin' in his relentless pursuit of wealth. He was a skilled miner, always searchin' for the next vein of precious ore. The lust for gold consumed him, and he spared no thought for the well-bein' of his kin. Me mother, Sigrid, suffered in silence as his greed drove a wedge between them. The pursuit of riches brought not joy, but great sorrow to our home.

Me mother
, she was a gentle soul, and his actions weighed heavily on her heart. Her once-joyful spirit crumbled under the weight of his obsession. She never recovered from the sadness his greed inflicted upon our family. It's the memory of her sufferin' that fuels me quest for balance and wisdom. I aim to break the cycle of greed that shattered me family. So, I've left me home with one goal - to be a better man than me father and to find knowledge. The stories tell of hidden knowledge, and I aim to uncover them on me own. This is why I'm here, in this swampy, dim town. What say ye, old one? Have ye heard of such ancient teachings in these parts?" Agnarr's gruff voice softens as he recounts the painful history of his family, revealing a vulnerability beneath his sturdy exterior.
