How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Knowing your capabilities and limitations as the character you've chosen to play within the setting you've set is a solid way to avoid powergaming. You can't be an expert swordsman one day and an all-knowing sorcered the next without having some kind of foundation to back up your claims. You can't roleplay your character as permanently crippled and when convenient say they can walk.

    Keep it realistic.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Overall, metagaming destroys roleplay and makes the game less fun for everyone.

Coming from a server where this was a major problem, I can attest to the fact that it can bring about unfavorable outcomes and kill motivation. For example x person carries valuables and happened to let that slip to a friend OOCly. Because of the friend who revealed the secret in the group chat, an entire squad is now online to shank x because they know where x is and what x is carrying with the intention to steal, even though they wouldn't know this information in-character.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

After clearing her throat, Eilise would enter the tent and sit down across from the hag. After staring into the creature's eyes for a while, she finally felt comfortable enough to ask, "Y'know me?"

Not that any of that was relevant at that moment. The scenario seemed incredibly peculiar, so she continued in an as calm and collected manner as she could, without waiting for an answer.

"I'm afraid my story isn't one that will shake ye. I was raised in the countryside, far from the capital's bright lights." - Eilise indicated a direction that was not clear - "My parents were peasants, which isn't nearly as horrible as people think! It's just a tad bit trickier during winter.."

As her hand went back to her knees, the woman mumbled something. Her brow furrowed as she thought back on the past. It was true that her family had to endure tougher days, but she tried to keep the negative aspects to herself. "My childhood friend was a Northerner who we took in to live with us after the death o' his father. After my parents came to peacefully pass too, Uther and I decided to sell the farm and start over in the city. I had hoped to get work as a seamstress there, and I'm still working to make that happen.. -- Oh! Oh, and I'm married to Uther, in case you were wonderin' which I am sure ye were."

A cheeky smile broke on her lips "Ah, yes. My parents loved him, and slowly I came to love him too."
