    How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is where if you (not your character, but YOU - the person who WRITES the character) gains information about something neither you nor your character knew beforehand and then, suddenly, your character knows everything on the subject. I've done this before on accident - I didn't know what it meant when it happened, though. Example: A character gets kidnapped and the person writing them messages a friend to save them. The friend's character couldn't know they were kidnapped/where/etc.
    How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming is something that a lot of younger writers do (I was one of them). They do unrealistic, extreme actions or have overpowered characters that can't ever die, can't lose in a fight, etc. Example: Rosie; powerful witch, demon, angel, queen of elves, immortal, most powerful witch ever, everyone falls in love with her, blah blah blah.

(Situation: Itria, her mother passed, now goes to a foreign city to venture the world.)

 

Blinding light reflected off of the crashing waves, harassing the eyes of Itria Da’Toren. She slightly squinted, raising a hand to reflect her sight as she made her way into a nearby market – maybe someone would be able to help her there. As she lowered her hand, a man (well-dressed, may she add) approached her and started asking her questions, warmly smiling down at her. A small chill went up her spine as she stumbled around her words, sheepishly smiling back. What did he want, really? No one was this friendly – especially not here.

“I-.. I do not know, exactly,” she glanced off to the side, checking her environment. “I just.. wish to stay safe. To...” her voice trailed off. “To start my life, perhaps.”
