How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: To avoid powergaming in roleplay, I make the character have no advantage in some instances by considering the situation from a real-life perspective - would my character succeed in a sneak attack if they didn't have good stealth ability? Would I be able to hit him without having to think about it? When conversing, especially in combat, you must keep this in mind.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming is using Out of Character information In Roleplay. It disturbs fair roleplay by making the experience less fascinating; while this may not be as awful for everyone, it can radically shift the flow of the plot, thereby making it less pleasurable.

Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

"Go on..."

"There had been a storm. In bright white flashes, lightning illuminated the sky. I was below decks, helping to a man who had fractured his leg. The ship abruptly flipped over. I was knocked out after being smacked in the head with a barrel." I take a breather and glance out the window. "I washed up on the beach." It's probably a few kilometers north of here. I was discovered by some fishermen. A man in rags informed me about this town and invited me to come talk to him."

"Yes," the elderly lady responds. This is because I've been here the longest. I've seen things you can't possibly fathom. And today, I'll get you started on your adventure."

"What journey?" I ask.

"Your trip, my friend. This is where it all starts. Now, leave my tent and learn more about yourself. Best wishes."

"Oh, I just, uh…" you stutter, tensing up. You eye the crone, then back outside the tent. For a moment, the air thickens with anticipation, until…
