In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: In order to prevent powergaming, you have to consider your character's limits and the other player’s roleplay experience. First, consider if your own character could even pull off an action that you want to do. Typically, if they aren’t already overpowered, they wouldn’t be able to win an attack first try, effortlessly, or complete multiple different tasks before the other player can do anything. For example, it’s unlikely your character would be able to dash behind a newcomer and slash them with a knife all before they’re noticed. Second, tying in with the previous example, the other player would normally react before you could do such an elaborate action. Not only that, but it makes the roleplaying experience more enjoyable for both parties and giving each other opportunities to defend or fight back, depending on what you are doing, creates a far more fun and interactive experience versus just winning in one go.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Preventing metagaming is necessary for a fair roleplaying experience because it helps avoid powergaming and keeping information IC and OOC separate. Just like with powergaming, your character shouldn’t just know things or magically be motivated to do something because your friend was telling you about something that would aid your character. Including descriptions, you should attempt to keep in mind what your character would and wouldn’t know based on what you have roleplayed. If you do metagame, it is not only unfair for other players who are abiding by the rules, but it also disrupts the roleplaying environment you have cultivated.

Character Name: Kezthar Kaivanel
Character Race: Dark Elf
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 19
Physical Description: He's 5'11, 185 lbs with noticable muscular definition. He naturally has white hair with crimson eyes and wears a variety of loose flowing clothing.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Kezthar pauses, silently foraging his mind for an acceptable answer. “I am looking for . . . ” He licks his cracked lips, somehow making them even drier. All the while, his distracted eyes wander along the tent’s walls, settling on the candles hovering above them. “A new beginning.” The words flow out of his mouth like molasses, and his eyes drift back down to the strange woman before him. Her steady gaze seemed to pierce right through his guard, and within moments, words he had intended to keep deep within his chest rapidly began to spill out. “More specifically, new people—not that I dislike my family—but I feel as if I am overstaying. Not just them, but after I had turned eighteen, I have had this feeling of urgency. Urgency to break beyond what I currently was. I tried to ignore it, but the signs were becoming more apparent. I couldn’t ignore them anymore, so I left.” The silence was deafening, awaiting for his closing statement, but it never came. Kezthar’s hands shifted awkwardly in his lap as his spine curled in on itself. There was an air of uncertainty, and it was evident he was holding himself back. Whatever it was, it remained unspoken. “And now, I hope to find something, or someone, to allow me to discover what I need!”
