Clariel was born to two great writers in Taliyna'maehr. She is very cold in feeling and is strategic with her words and actions doing whatever she can to get what she wants. Her thought process is very much "I will do anything to learn or gain unknown knowledge". Most of her so called childhood and adolescents was spent in the library and many classrooms in which she tried to advance her knowledge as best she could in everything from science and the fine arts to the study of magic. The end goal of her gaining all this knowledge is to both gain power in a political way and a physical one.

They duck into one of the shacks, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the small room, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study their face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a chair, “Where do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?”
