Asterion Ruric is the eldest son of Avon Ruric, and a brother of Aran Ruric. Avon being a highlander and Astraea, his mother, being a Heartlander, created tensions regarding the politics within Norland. The reason the boy's father moved the three was due to corruption within the Norland government. After Astraea's sudden murder in the Santegia marketplace, Aran took the young boys to a small village by the name of Belivitz, which is only known for being next to the Whispering Crossroads. Avon, being illiterate could not teach his sons in the art of reading and scribing. He unfortunately excluded the boys from the public reach, and this caused the boys to start roaming around in the wildlands nearby. Asterion's brother was quick-minded, and began playing with his father's bow, beginning to become an expert at the sport. Asterion on the other hand, being slow-minded, preferred throwing his weapons, as it wasn't as dependent on accuracy. Asterion and Aran became close, constantly bettering their skills in the art of the hunt.

They duck into one of the shacks, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the small room, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study their face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a chair, “Where do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?”
