How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Powergaming is a serious problem in all roleplaying contexts. I have experienced both sides of the coin when it comes to abusing the advantages provided by the rules set for roleplay. I understand that all it does is damage immersion and trivialize the world given to roleplayers. I understand that any abuse of rules/customs leads to a decline in the experience for all players involved. To avoid such satiations I first approach every 'conflict' as one that can go in any manner possible, especially the ones I do not expect. Going into a conflict believing that you are destined to win neglects other's experience and cultivates an environment that is built around one person. Secondly, if I am being powergamed against, my main concern is to not break emersion and to let it play out. It's much easier to sort out the powergaming after the situation than it is to interrupt with an argument. Powergaming is a real problem, the solution is always to seek avoidance, and if that's not possible, then it is necessary to play along and pursue a resolution after the fact.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming obviously disrupts fair roleplay. If one player/collective discovers an effective way of farming for a specific material/progression aspect/advantage then they are entitled to reap the benefits due to their discovery. Informing a majority of players on how to min-max their gameplay towards a numerical increase instead of a subjective lore improvement damages the roleplaying environment. The result of metagaming is a majority of players investing into a minority of content, which not only hurts developers (they are more focused with fine tuning balancing instead of adding new content), but it also hurts players (many players will be using the same build/ farming the same locations). In totality, metagaming turns roleplay into an accessory, rather than letting roleplay guide the experience.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

At first, anxious about what to share with the mysterious figure, I say, "There's not too much to tell, I'm a low-born elf". After looking into the hag's eyes and seeing no intent for harm, as a young naïve elf, I go on to say: "I'm looking for texts, this town supposedly held instructions for magic that the academy has lost it's records for". I went on to divulge "I've studied magic my whole life, and it is the reason I would even put myself in such a dangerous situation. I just want to understand more about the forces that guide the world around us. I hope I haven't intruded on anything, if I have I will leave and not come back." The hag waves her hand and says "I just want to understand who you are, what you came from". After a couple moments of contemplation, I respond, "Well I'm from a family that did not respect the arts, they wanted me to pursue academia, and study plants. But I won't sit in a room and watch moss grow on rocks. I refuse to be contained to sciences. I want to understand why things go wrong, what makes the lightning burn the forest down? Do you understand?"
