In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: By keeping things grounded and realistic while also taking into account the other people who you are roleplaying with and their positions. Asking yourself "is this something my character could feasibly do," or "Is this fun and fair for the other people I'm roleplaying with," are good places to start to make sure you are staying within the lines.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming gives you information that your character has no way of knowing or obtaining and if you as a player act on that information, it's unfair to everyone involved. Let's say you're roleplaying a cop or something and you see out of character where the hideout for a criminal gang is located. Going to check out that hideout in character is super unfair because there's no way your character could have known it was there. It undermines and insults the hard work of everyone else roleplaying fairly.

Character Name: Cedric Redgrave
Character Race: High Elf
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 20
Physical Description: Cedric Redgrave is a 5'8" high elf with silvery white hair and jade green eyes. He is pretty skinny weighing in at around 125 pounds.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Cedric takes an immediate step back, not fully expecting someone to be waiting in such a dilapidated looking tent. "O-oh," he stammers out, "you... know me?" Cedric paused for several moments waiting for a response, but one doesn't come. "Alright, I guess..." he mutters as he nervously looks around the room. After a brief moment, Cedric slowly lowers himself into the cushion.

He stares intently at the hag, tracing every wrinkle, every mole, taking in every detail of her face as if to try and ascertain her intent. She's been expecting me? How does this lady know me? He lets out a shaky breath. "You want my story? Sure, why not." Cedric shifts in the cushion leaning forward slightly. "I'm a traveler- well... a wanderer really. I'm a high elf," He subtly gives a little gesture to his silver hair and pointed ears, "And I'm a long way from home." There is a brief pause where Cedric seems to get lost in thought before shaking his head. "You see, I grew up in Haelun'or, in a traditional High Elf family. My parents were so strict. They had all of these ideas and plans for me. They knew exactly what they wanted me to study, what profession they wanted me to go into, they told me what to wear, what to do, and even who I was allowed to hang out around. I felt like I was constantly living for them... well, eventually I had enough and decided to start living for myself."

Cedric's tense body language loosens up slightly, "Truth is, I didn't care about any of the pointless things they cared about. I don't care about purity or bloodline or any of the other nonsense they spout. I don't want to live my life following the path someone else tells me to walk. I don't have a clue who I am... but I want to find out." He breathes out a long sigh before continuing. "I left home two years ago now and have been wandering ever since, taking odd jobs here and there to get by. I'm just trying to find where I belong."
