How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is the act of using out of character knowledge in characterly, more than often to gain some kind-of advantage in game. A good example of that is roleplaying that you know someone's character name because you've seen it in chat/hovering over their person, while your character themselves have never met said person.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming is a broad definition which mostly boils down to performing unfair/unrealistic for your character actions - the term also includes the act of forcing another player's character to comply with your action, without giving them the time/opportunity to react or avoid it. Two examples I can provide of PG is roleplaying that your character picks up a tree and chucks it off into the distance with ease, while roleplaying a character that in no way would be physically fit enough to do anything close to that.
Another example is roleplaying an action where you punch somebody and 1-punch knock them out. This is powergaming in a way that assumes your action's success instantly without taking into consideration the other player's roleplay.

Gnargoth The Shiesty stomps down onto the pier. The wooden structure creaks under his boots. The Orc's eyes lay on the crowded, unfamiliar architecture around him. A brief scoff enters the air before Gnargoth decides not to waste any more time and continues walking down the pier, the whistles of numerous merchants advertising their product ringing in his ears.

He ends up towering over a fancy clad citizen, who seems way too stubborn to get out of his way.

Should he stay true to his nature and move the man away, or should he wait and listen? Considering the circumstances, Gnargoth chose the latter.

After listening to the man ramble, Gnargoth briefly answered: "Uh appreciate yo' hozpitelity, Human. Though we ur onleh' pazzin by."

Lowering his meaty hand down to the little human's level, Gnargoth shared skin with him, cementing his and his brother's stay in the city.
